Just a word vomit so I can sort out some thoughts about a possible alternative explanation of why some operators might not understand the term of deep oceans. Under a readmore because this is mostly me trying to sort out my thought points and will thus be a mess.
So like, here’s the thing. People understand the concept of water, they know water. But not the boundless part. But here’s the thing though, Arknights is a world in which they’re very much constantly on the move. They have to be, either that or stationary cities have to have elaborate evac plans that can get it’s entire population out within a week.
They have better disaster warnings than we do. Meaning? That’s probably where all their research went into. Think about it. That’s their priority. They’re in a world where Catastrophe research needs to take foreground. There’s no reason why it shouldn’t. It’s their lives on the line. The more they can understand it, the more they can avoid massive losses of life.
It’s also or Originum comes to them, which is what they use as their power source. Which, is very much a thing. (also a reminder that they use Arts for their guns because they use originum in the guns because they never discovered gunpowder. Also guns are apparently stupid costly if you’re not Laterano).
So here’s an idea. There’s never been research in the ocean. You’ll never really grasp how wide or deep the ocean is. Not when there’s never been the need to. Not when they’re always landbound. There’s no concept of how big waters can get if all you ever see it is from the shore. I mean, it wouldn’t be that new of a concept?
Even now in the world we live in, there are folks who has never seen the ocean. Nor seen snow, because they live in a landbound sort of place where these things aren’t accessible to them. The reason why we know of these concepts isn’t because we know of the instinctively because they exist. But because we’re a global community where knowledge is pretty wide spread.
Arknights is not such a universe. They’re all pretty localized people at times, despite being constantly shuffled around. Their worries about making a living place where they can live comfortably without being hit by the next Catastrophe.
The biggest of scientists are still Explorers. They go out to where nobody else has been. In fact, from the recent reel, it’s more or less implied that they’ve only recently been able to climb up to volcanoes and other such things. It’s not that strange to guess that their capabilities for stuff like air travel and sea travel is more limited than what we have.
I mean, we as a people only have the word ‘orange’ after the fruit orange. Because we’ve only ever needed the word orange in more recent times to describe the colour. As far as people are concerned. Orange didn’t exist before the word came about, it’s just that ‘red yellow’ colour. Violet too, was once just ‘blue’. It’s not that they don’t have the concept for it. It’s just that the word doesn’t exist. And potentially because the concept of it was never one they had to think about before everything else.
I mean. In canon, Kjerag, the place where Silverash is from, is a pretty isolated place as well. Most of it’s business is ran internally. And it’s a snowy mountain area which probably has no local large bodies of water.
I mean, the fact that it’s only some operators who don’t understand it and not all of it, kinda implies that there are those who know what an ocean or sea is? Keeping in mind that the Agreians are actually not the majority of our Operators. And that Kal’tsit knows how to speak their language.
That or, if that’s too much for anyone.
The oceans are covered in ice. So the surface of it is mostly ice or debris from volcanic eruptions and nobody has dug beneath the surface to find them before.
