My favorite malt distilleries (and some thoughts on other distilleries, too!)
People often ask me: “Michael, what are your favorite Scottish distilleries? You know so much about Scotch whisky, I really want to pick your brain and find out which distilleries you keep coming back to!” Just kidding. No one has ever asked me that, although I have often wished someone would ask me about my favorite distilleries. Well, I’m not waiting any longer to be asked–I’m just going to…

Our Whisky of the Month for August: Ardnamurchan Highland Single Malt
In August, we present a special drop: the Ardnamurchan Highland Single Malt Whisky – an impressive example of the new generation of Scottish whiskies that combines modern distilling techniques with deep-rooted tradition.
The Ardnamurchan Distillery is located in seclusion on the peninsula of the same name, on the west coast of Scotland – one of the wildest and most unspoilt regions of the Highlands. In this unique environment, a whisky is created that impresses not only with its origin but also with its craftsmanship.
Ardnamurchan Single Malt is a classic Highland whisky with a subtle maritime influence. The use of both unpeated and peated malt creates a wonderfully balanced flavor profile: sweet and fruity, with a subtle smokiness and a mineral touch reminiscent of the rugged coastal landscape. Maturation in a combination of 65% bourbon and 35% sherry casks adds further depth.

Ardnamurchan Whisky The Midgie 2025 Release is a special and eagerly anticipated limited edition from the Ardnamurchan Distillery, dedicated to the infamous tiny Scottish midges. This bottling, produced on the remote Ardnamurchan peninsula, is characterized by a creative cask composition and the distillery's typical style, which includes both peated and unpeated spirit.
The 2025 “Midgie” release differs significantly in its maturation from previous editions. It matured in a complex combination of casks:
50% ex-bourbon casks (American oak)
48% Ruby Port casks
2% sherry casks (a small proportion, often a peated sherry butt)
The whisky is a blend of 75% unpeated and 25% peated spirit, promising a balance of fruitiness and gentle smoke. The spirits used are from 2017, 2018, and 2019.
The Midgie 2025 is bottled at 48% ABV.
Like all Ardnamurchan whiskies, this bottling is non-chill filtered and has retained its natural color to preserve its full aroma and flavor profile.
Number of bottles: 16,500
Windy.
