The Heart of Valentine’s Day
Raven sat with his quill in the ink staring at his blank page. For centuries he watched this holiday send careful men into lovesick tizzies and the most upright man to the Great Raven’s service. He’d never understood it as a Raven, merely took advantage of like all the other human traditions that he’d never cared to grasp. But now, this blank page made him more anxious that the entirety of the fight with Snow. ( Okay, well maybe not the entirety. But a good portion! )
He lifted his quill, hovering it over the page. Let’s start easy. My dear Credenza,. Wait, no, is that too formal? Maybe simply Credenza? No, no she deserves a more elaborate address.
Once he’d settled on just ‘Dear Credenza,’ he looked down to see a puddle of ink settling on his page. He sighed and rolled his eyes as he crumpled the page tossing it toward the dozen or so other unacceptable pages.
He replaced the quill in the inkwell, hanging his head in his hands. How could it be this hard. He knew Credenza. He was sure that she’s would be happy with his note, even if he had to strike out a few words, or there was an ink spill. But he couldn’t! He wanted it perfect for her. And yet this pen seemed to have a vendetta against him. It wanted him to fail, that was the only explanation.
He sighed again, this time in disgust with himself. It was nothing to do with the quill, that much was certain. He stood, grabbing the necklace he’d made for her. It was much like the hairclip he’d made the year prior. It was made out of extra ship parts, depicting a dragonfly; however, this one was more delicate. He’d managed to pick up some gemstones that he also incorporated into it.
He sat back down, grabbing another sheet of paper.
No matter how corny, I must start by saying that words cannot capture my feelings for you. You made me into the man I am (truly!) but more than that, you gave me a chance to truly be something and someone more than I was created to be. You literally changed my design. Over thousands of years, I’ve never met someone who's captured and kept my attention like you have. You changed the stars design for more people than I can count, and never give up on those who need you. Your bravery outdoes the most heroic heroes, and compassion goes beyond the fairest of princesses.
He stopped crumpling up the paper yet again. However this time it was intercepted on its trip to the ever growing pile. “What’s this? Trying to build book a friend?” She joked, unrolling the page. “What-” She glanced, briefly up, not even long enough to see his face becoming the same shade as his wing. Her eyes scanned the page, and then again. “Oh, Raven-”
He smiled, accepting his fate. He took the necklace, going behind her to fasten the necklace. She reached up, touching it gingerly before that familiar sly smile returned to her lips. She turned around, wrapping her arounds around his neck. “Quite the romantic, aren’t we?” She teased, leaning her forehead against his.
“Hey, you can’t live as long as me without picking up on some cliches.” His smile matched hers, as he lifted her chin. “Like...this,” He tilted her head slightly, bringing his lips to meet hers.
