St. Lawrence Centre Redevelopment - work by @mecanoo_ , @rdharch, @tworowarchitect, and @nakdesign . "We are proud to share our shortlisted design for the St. Lawrence Centre Redevelopment - A new cultural hub for the city of Toronto! The shapes of the new volumes are inspired the indigenous aesthetics and feature a nonorthogonal language of nature that contrasts with the straight lines of the preserved brutalist façade. In this way, we preserve the essence of Brutalism, playfully integrating it with a new aesthetic language. The contrast between two creates striking new image of STLC. Harajuku Quest - Designed by @shohei_shigematsu @omanewyork for NTT Urban Development Co., Ltd., Harajuku Quest will be a renewed commercial and cultural center in Harajuku, Tokyo, and the firm’s first ground-up mixed-use building in Omotesando. Construction of the 87,000-square-feet complex began in October and is expected to complete in February 2025. Shohei Shigematsu, OMA Partner, said, “The conjunction of Omotesando and Oku-Harajuku embodies a duality of urban context as well as Tokyo’s fashion and retail culture. It was essential for the new building to bridge the two areas and express two stories. Like two sides of the same coin, a single building conveys alternate personalities, connected by a new public corridor. Diagon Commercial Building - Designed by @dollshoii "Haebangchon means Freedom or Liberation town, located near Itawon and Yongsan, where many foreign nationals and US army personnel reside. It has recently been retrofitted with many hip Korean and western bars and restaurants, where the young international crowd mingles. The site is at the hilltop where great views of the city are available. (only when you reach the rooftop). The first idea is to provide a rooftop view that is blocked by the building itself. A wormhole-like, diagonal, floor-piercing staircase starts from the roadside leading to the balcony on the 2nd floor providing a great view. This diagonal blackhole wormhole staircase is designed as an offering, an offering to the public, like the offering of a shaded arch by Louis Khan at Kimbell. Another public offering is a circular seat disguised as steps at the entrance concave. Design proposal for renew the Castello di Locarno in Ticino, Switzerland - Designed by @christgantenbein in collaboration with @baukuh_official @yellowoffice Visualization by @filippobolognese "The competition to renew the Castello di Locarno in Ticino, Switzerland invited an international roster of design studios to update the historic complex into a new cultural center. Christ & Gantenbein together with @baukuh_official and @yellowoffice won the second prize. The proposal includes a series of delicate and coordinated interventions that modify several points of the complex producing a unified strategy and a coherent constellation of much-needed and valuable updates. The design removes barriers separating the two-building complex consisting of the Castello and the Casorella, from the urban context near the Piazza Grande and the city of Locarno. The South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) - Designed by @woodsbagot "Located alongside the new Royal Adelaide Hospital, this project reinforces South Australia as a major center for medical research. The state-of-the-art facility accommodates approximately 700 researchers from around the world while the iconic architecture is meant to symbolise, inspire and promote the building’s function. This is the first LEED Gold laboratory building in Australia, attained by moves such as the passive design of the floor plates and the use of a diagrid façade, both of which optimize natural light and minimize energy use. The Powder Ridge Residence is a 2300 sf custom HOMB modular residence built in Washington State by @MethodHomes and placed at @PowderMountain Resort outside of Eden, Utah. Design concept for The Portland Museum of Art’s Campus Unification and Expansion - work by @mvrdv for @portlandmuseum "This design opens the museum to the city by inviting the public into the campus and enabling access from all sides. The campus becomes part of the streetscape, the city, and the community. ⁠ ⁠ With only a light touch, the PMA’s new wing is stitched into the campus with respect for the existing buildings. It becomes a collection of community and museum programmes stacked vertically, each floor with a distinctive use, atmosphere, and appearance. Publicly activated “spill-out spaces” weave around and overlap with these new programmes.⁠ ⁠ As a beacon of the new era for the PMA, the new wing will stand tall in the city. Exposed to all, it will seek attention and invite the city in, to experience, to explore, and to make it a part of their world.
