Captain laughs because she’s never been wholly there, not in a long time, but the blood loss is getting to her and she laughs even harder because of it.

“fuck,” she says. “I never fuckin’ saw it before now.”

Locke glances at her, takes a moment to get the grip just right. the flannel blanket wrapped around her maimed arm is steadily turning red. “didn’t see what?”

and she might be half mad and half dead and half lost in her own code, but the glint of her golden eye is still sharp as a knife and he says, “how much you’re like him.”

Locke starts walking. it’s slow, and dangerous, and the world blitzes into Hell around them. “who?”

“Bolte,” says Captain, and she says it like the comparison is a prize and Locke can’t see the knight on the battlefield, not right now, through the haze of Encounters and burning blazing freezing static magic, but he knows that it is.
