Time seemed to be Caleb’s worse enemy, so it seemed. How long had it been since he’d seen her? He’d been stuck in his own head, so focused on shit that didn’t matter that he’d pushed away the one thing that had mattered to him. Her.
And she looked beautiful. More than he remembered. Breath caught in his throat as they locked eyes. He couldn’t look away if he tried. He didn’t know if he should say something. Didn’t know if she wanted to hear what he might want to say, but she was heading his direction anyways.
“Wow.” It’s the first word he can think to say, “Hi! It’s been … so long … too long.” He tries not to let his eyes leave her face. He doesn’t want her to get the wrong impression. He doesn’t want her to feel like he’s worse than he already feels he is.
“You look … amazing! I … hi.” His cheeks flushed. He wondered if an apology would mean anything to her. He didn’t know how to make up for his absence. He didn’t know how to make it feel sincere. He just hoped she’d feel it.
