The first thing I did after finishing RC9GN was check AO3, and not even WordGirl can describe my glee at discovering Becky Botsford & Randy Cunningham was already a canon tag. Glad we're all on the same page with that one.
Just to be clear, they're emergency contacts-in-law because they both have Super Why's number, but not each other's <3

There's another joke to be made about things Kid Math would say to Willem Viceroy III because he has a number in his name, but I think I shan't.

Play nice, Bdubs thinks, and forces a grimace into a smile. âIâve gotta pick up Scott. He told me to get him tonight; heâs got somewhere to be.â
âSo⌠you want me to open the door - because the mayor forgot his own schedule - so you can ruin Pearlâs happy fluffy cuddle time. The one thing Iâve seen her put her walls down for since Smajor crashed at our place. Yeah, I think Iâll pass; I donât need her mad at me.â
âTheyâre both fine, though? Did you hear them both, or just him?â
Rhetoric squints. âWhy did you say it like that?â
Bdubs squints right back at him. âOpen the door, please. Your dragonâs nursing babies at the slime tree. Mine is locked in a room with his ex, not answering his comm.â
Bdubs checks on Scott and Pearl⌠And after a long week of seeing other people, Grian slinks home to his wife.
(First 1,000 words under the cut - Warning for mob hybrid Scott and Pearl playing bitey-face like dogs... or whatever tf dragons/vampires do)

đ¤Â đ¤Â đ
Scott Smajor is a dragon, an allay, and a vex, and his soul is boiling him alive. Pearl can feel every pulse through the hand resting on his chest. She tries to warn him. Some itchy thing in the back of his mind knows that. His systemâs overheating, so he doesnât stop her as she separates his skin from soul. She goes right down the front. Snap. Snap. Snap. Itâd be terrifying, belly-up like prey, thoroughly exposed, if it were any other anivore. But he is always safe with Pearl.
âáâ´áęáˇ?â she asks, tucking hair behind her ear. Scott squints back through bleary eyes. Even when every twitching letter and decimal in his system burns, Pearl still sees the best in him. Thinks heâs capable of answering.
The only reply he gives is breath, his chest shaking every time it puffs. Scott lifts one hand, groping for Pearlâs shoulder, to find it as electric blue as the day he spawned. The glitch eating him alive no longer feigns at subtlety. Heâs never glowed so cyan. Heâs never flashed so white.
âáăŞáâ´áˇâˇ á˛áˇ,â Pearl repeats, as if sheâs not also riding the line between the sober and the scorned. Sparks zigzag in lightning bolts up his arm, his fingers dripping energy. Itâs openly making Pearlâs mouth water as she drinks him in. Danger, the part of him thatâs still prey whispers in his head. Thereâs a vampire bat crouching over him, blocking the lanternlight with her hunched-up wings. Freckles spatter her pale shoulder. Her hairâs a mess, tangled and frizzy in her face. She needs to go offline, or find a phantom to straighten out her code again. She looks like a drooping jacaranda tree⌠The kind heâs not supposed to keep blocks of in his office, even though he canât be stopped.
I can fix you. He snags her hair between his fingers, pulling it down into his mouth. Pearl huffs, probably in laughter, and doesnât stop him. â⸠̣ đšâŁáˇâ¸ ĚŁ âáˇâˇ.â
She feels like snow packed against him⌠Thereâs a reason dragons tell their spawnlings to build Nether portals in the tundra. Scott sinks into her, or she sinks into him, as pixels crackle and data blurs. His system whirrs a little louder, scrounging for something that could pass as solid form.
Scott Smajor is twisting from an allay into a vex. Glitched, corrupted, and flaring up, heâs the breath between a predator and prey. When he sinks his teeth in Pearlâs arm, she bites his neck just as hard. It feels like ointment - feels like bandages - and the next time he bites, he doesnât let go.
âáľáęá˛, ááľđšâ¸ ĚŁ ⸠̣.â
Scott twitches when he hears his name. It doesnât stop him. He clings on until Pearlâs pixels escape between his teeth, like heâs an alligator leaping at a monkey hiding in the tree leaves. Only then does he loosen up. He opens and shuts his mouth at her. Pearl chitters some squeaky, chirpy thing, her fingers tangled in the back of his hair. Scott surges up, snapping fangs. He misses her throat on purpose, but catches hair on accident. They fumble. Pearlâs teeth hit his face as he tries to shove her back.
Pause. Panting, licking saliva from shining lips. Pearlâs hand finds his scalp and pushes hair down into his eyes, narrowly missing the sensitive center of his forehead. Scott licks his lips a second time, turning his face aside. Her hand drags across his nose before dropping to his chest, like before.
Pixels prickle. They breathe together, spit dripping from their teeth, as Scottâs system starts to settle down. That whirring noise gets a little quieter. Pearl leans in, twisting her head to fit beneath his chin. She nips his throat. Scott catches the edge of his mouth in hers, just enough to push her back, and scrapes a hand across her chest. Both adjust. Quick bites, teeth flashing- They banter until Pearl snaps her wings. She jumps back, further down the bed. Scottâs played this game a thousand times before, in ten thousand stolen memories. Not with Pearl, though.
Never with Pearl.
Pearl springs forward, scuffing with soft hand. Scott blocks it with an arm, snapping his fangs just as she snaps hers. They slap each other with their hands - never enough to cause a damage tick - while growls and teeth clacks fill the air. Pearl wiggles to her belly at some point, coming in with less force, but just as much speed. Scott shows teeth, eyes locked on her nearest arm. But when she swats him hard, he jerks up with a hiss.
Pearl tilts sideways. Doesnât matter. He nails her throat right in the pouch, sinking in his teeth. Soul energy crackles like redstone wire. He clamps her in place⌠and there they sit: awkwardly bent, breathing in the dark. Loose pixels roll down her twitching skin.
Her throat feels softer than he thought it would. His tongue laps up her dry moss taste, but she lacks scratchy edges and itchy leaves. He nicks deeper, but this time, Pearl pulls back hard. He lets her twist away.
I want a turn on top. Pearlâs been greedy. Scott canât put weight on his glitched-out hand. His skinâs sliding off where she loosened the front, exposing raw energy beneath. He butts his head to Pearlâs shoulder. This playful nipping isnât a very âallayâ game. He canât bend his injured fingers, but he crashes both arms on top of her, shoving her. Pearl flops sideways on the bed. He finds her throat easily enough and claims it in his teeth again. Itâs more fun now that he can bear his weight down. Pixels smart like lightning when they mix. As he pulls his teeth off her neck, Pearl blinks up at him through wary eyes.
Scott Smajor is an allay. His wings flex without his mental input; theyâve got instincts of their own.
My siblings like to play a customizable card game called Blank, which is like Uno, except every time someone wins, they get to create a new card. This causes the rules to evolve out of control. My siblings have purchased additional decks, so our card count is massive (We don't play with them all at once). Many mechanics are in play at any time.
I visited them for a week and we played this game a ton, so these are the cards I made after my victories (First game in years, too!):
Character card for Carnell (with the power to drive) - Mighty Bug 5
Yes, I did just find out after 21 years that his name is not Carnell and yes, I'm mad about it because I quote his tagline on the regular.
Most characters have stats like strength, charisma, and wisdom, but not Carnell... No no no. All his stats are dexterity (because his superpower is driving; he also plays the drums??)
Coincidentally, the Acrobat class can dodge attacks if their dexterity is over 12 (at the cost of 1 dexterity each time they do that).
I played as Carnell with 20 dexterity, so I kicked everybody's butt, was the sole survivor among my family (who were drowning under too many monsters), and did something like 60 out of 100 damage to the boss monster (The Devil from Cuphead) and won again. Carnell's first day on the job and he drove circles around the Devil. My king.
With that victory, I made this card:
We have a monster battle mechanic in what used to be an Uno-style game, and I was really happy with how my Ninja card came out. I also got permission to up this card's number to a 9. Very cool!
Most monsters get discarded if they kill a player, but when You Are The Ninja! is in play, they stay in (and move left).
Also, you can only play this on Reds since we don't have other 9s to match it with, which makes it slightly harder to secretly discard under other cards and avoid playing it, and that's funny. I also like that whichever character is Ninja receives a small stat boost (Their new strength is now a base 9, higher than any other card unless you have The Cursed 30), but not a crazy stat boost, which feels accurate to the lore.
To be clear, defeating monsters is not a win condition. Every time someone draws a new monster, the Ninja is back on duty. Sometimes we have games with 10+ monsters and it's his problem. The Ninja also receives no victory reward (making a new card) even if he is on a team with someone who wins, or if he wins in any other way, if there are still monsters on the board. Gold stars only go to Ninjas who do their job.
My mom (who dislikes designing cards) cheerfully played it on herself, and in another game played it on me. I stared mournfully as my brother navigated his meeple through the dungeon map and accidentally triggered Smaug the dragon: a monster with enormous health.
I protested that the Ninja surely doesn't know there's a dragon in the dungeon, but the consensus was that I had to fight it anyway because "It is his duty as a Ninja" and that became our favorite phrase every time we mentioned him.
It is also very funny to have a wacky character who is suddenly chosen as Ninja of Norrisville. Have you seen this line-up; it ain't the Ritz in here.
I also designed the monster DOR-15 (from Meet the Robinsons). Here's her monster side, plus the loot you receive on her defeat:
We also have a mechanic where time advances from day to night to day again. Some cards (like Werewolf) have special effects that only occur at night. For reasons unknown to me, the custom is to track time of day with a 3D-printed rat called Time Rat (Meant to be summoned by asking, "What's the time, Time Rat?" in a cheerful kid's show voice).
So, I made Time Rat a monster card; here he is (and his loot):
Once Time Rat is slain, time stops advancing. You are trapped in a timeless society.
And my final card before I went home was of course Sasuke Uchiha-
- because I had recently come off a game where I was playing against my dad (Sylvester McMonkey McBean), who midway through the game invented the Star-On, Star-Off Machine and banned everyone without stars upon thars from victory until they could earn coins, which he was also depleting from us every turn through other mechanics. I cannot emphasize enough how badly I needed someone as serious as Sasuke to exist in the same world as Sylvester. I was playing Elmer Fudd at the time.
Sasuke was also our first character in a new class called Avenger, where - upon another player's death - his new win condition is to kill whoever (or whatever) killed that player. This also upgrades him to a Villain. If for some reason his Mark is discarded (i.e. a monster is vanquished by someone other than him), he stops being a villain. I love him.
Semi-relevant, but shout-out to that one video essay YouTuber (Mugiwara No Goofy) who said Naruto and Sasuke have a TON of stressful problems at any time, so the fact that Kakashi even bothers to occasionally check on Sakura is proof that he's a great teacher and "really loves that girl." I don't know why that's the funniest thing in the world to me, but it is. Me and my one student who's doing fine sipping our smoothies while eyeing up those other nuts.
Bonus shout-out to a commenter who said Sasuke continued living in the Uchiha murder site by himself after the massacre, because I crack up every time I think about it. is that true. why didn't they find him a new house.
I also want to shout out the Avatar card, which is a white "envelope" with a slot cut out of it so you can put another card inside it (visibly), and which rotates through the Avatar Cycle (different colors of the deck) every time someone dies with the Avatar in hand. We have a photo gallery of past avatars and you can channel their powers.
There's a The Saurus card: a dinosaur who makes one person try to name a synonym listed in our pocket thesaurus (for a randomly assigned word). There are not many synonyms for each word since it's a small thesaurus. You take damage for each letter in the word. I failed mine (contingency) and died. Tough.
There's a meteor card that kills all dinosaurs, although BIIG YOSHI is immune because we found the Super Mario Wiki refers to Yoshi as a "dinosaur-like character." You can also die of Dysentery (I think if you draw it, you die immediately unless someone has an antidote).
One sibling made a Kuzcotopia addition to the Catan-themed gameplay where you can play Kuzcotopia to smash other people's settlements and replace them with your summer getaway house.
Sibling is also brainstorming a character card for Cappy (Mario Odyssey) who only takes his turn by possessing other people's characters.
10/10 game that has been growing in our family for years; will play again on my next visit. The company went under during COVID iirc, but if you ever find one (or a knock-off version), consider trying it. It does help to have one of the original decks so you don't have to make all the colors and numbers from scratch, but you could if you wanted to.

âPearl⌠How do you know you donât want an allay partnership if youâve never been in one? I mean, we were fine in Last Life when we were cuddling. I cleaned, I did the dishes-â
âI just know,â she says, turning to stare at him head-on. âHow do you know youâre a first-heart? Or that you might like playing hunter more than quarry, or that youâre gay?â
âThatâs different,â he complains.
âIs it?â
âYeah? Iâm a hunter because Iâm turning into a vex, which is an apex predator. Iâm gay because cute shirtless men make my knees get weak, and Iâm a first-heart because I want to be the one running my hands down those glistening abs more than I want someone doing that to me. Those are unchangeable parts of my code, but being friends - like an allay partnership - is a mental thing. When I eat souls, itâs because I have to. I enjoy hanging out with you.â
After a long night of talking, Pearl teaches Scott how to eat a soul. I heard you can't spell "dramedy" without "uh-oh."

đ¤Â đ§ĄÂ đ
Scottâs exhausted, riled up on moonfluence, and worst of all⌠embarrassed. He doesnât clarify all that, but Pearl would be the same. They untangle from the bed and spend a few minutes walking around. Scottâs got moonlight to shake like water off his wings. Break time offers Pearl the chance to follow up with Bdubs, because if she doesnât, heâll probably lose his mind. She checks her comm, but he hasnât sent another âStill good?â since she asked he keep his distance. Hm. Maybe heâs treating her like an adult who can make her own choices after all.
She sends another whisper anyway. Adultingâs a two-way street and sheâs not gonna drop the ball on keeping Bdubs in the loop. She sits at the bar counter while Scottâs on the other side, eating another brownie. He sees her typing. Heâs not near enough to read the screen and he doesnât ask who, but Pearl glances up and their eyes meet anyway. He doesnât look thrilled sheâs talking to someone on the side.
âIâll put it away,â she tells him. âJust writing someone back while we chill.â
âAbout the cat?â
âWhat?â
âYou said you might adopt a second cat. You, uh⌠donât date, so you-â And he laughs, tossing back his head. âYou sort of glitched out my go-to options there! I was like, âNo, Pearl doesnât like women; canât gush and ask her who,â and âOh no, she doesnât like men either.â Pearl, thatâs all I have.â
She laughs along with him, and exchanges a glance with herself inside her head. You canât think of anyone else Iâd talk to if Iâm not trying to pick them up?
Sigh. Sheâs pouring words down his throat with a ladle. Deep breath. Remember⌠If Cleo and Martyn made it work, she and Scott can too. Open communication. Honest expectations. No judgment. Apologies. Thatâs how it all goes down.
He pauses for a moment, then says, âIâm sorry you got pulled away from Gem and Impulse. Bdubs⌠Bdubs mentioned that. I was dragon brain when I had him invite you to tea party. I didnât know.â
âNo worries. You needed me.â
That comment leaves him visibly uncomfortable. He stands there, half a brownie in his hand. Pearl doesnât pay him much attention, swiftly messaging a couple other people whoâd sent her whispers. Look, she might as well. Scott walks away at some point. Pearl hears the balcony door squeak open. Heâs probably checking the lock.
⌠Heâs not, when she looks up again. The door is shut. Huh? Pearl crosses the living room, a spatter of nerves curving up her spine as she canât see Nugget, until she hears a mew from up the hallway. Pearl squints through the window to confirm Scottâs not talking to someone on his comm. Heâs definitely there, though⌠slumped against the rail, fingers tangled at the front of his hair. His bunâs pulling loose. Pearl opens the door as noisily as she can.
âHey. You all right, mate? We can meet tomorrow if you need a longer break.â
Scott says⌠nothing at all. He stares down over the small section of New Star that her balcony overlooks. Thereâs not much to see out here in the southeast corner - Pretty much everythingâs on the buildingâs other side - but the lanterns are nice, all glowing blue and white. Pearl leans against the balconyâs edge, trying to give Scott plenty of space without, yâknow⌠letting the guy who is a dragon and clearly fighting with some strong emotions right now out of her sight.
âI,â he finally says, âfeel like Iâve gaslit, gatekept, girlbossâd too close to the sun. Iâve gaslit myself, I think.â
Yeah, and he looks it, too. âYou wanna talk longer?â Pearl jabs a thumb somewhere in the west. âMy boss needs Moo today, not me. Iâve got nowhere else to be.â
âThis isnât something I can talk about. Thank you, though.â
⌠Not sure what thatâs about. âMind if I hang out anyway?â See also, do not let the dragon stay unsupervised on the balcony. Thatâs not just a precaution for destructive powers, but if Alice seizes control of his body while his attentionâs not all there and gets into trouble, well⌠Imagine if he careened into a wall and died from kinetic energy. Not good.
Scott shrugs. So together, spaced apart, they wait the minutes out on a little balcony in a little corner of a little city underground, way out here at the edge of the world. Or what may as well be, anyway. Pearl, knowing how much he loves to talk, expects that Scott will spill his thoughts eventually. He mostly doesnât. After a while, he just asks if he can hug her again. She allows it. He squeezes her tight. Theyâve got their collision back enough to feel it. Then he wipes his face and says if she gives him a couple more minutes, heâll fix the door.
Pearl, maybe against her better judgment, carefully gives him alone time after that. She stays in the living room, though, until Scottâs ready to come back in. He waves his hand, rainbow sparkles glittering, and hands her a brand new key. Locks are changed. She thanks him and says she plans to tell Martyn off. Scott grumbles that she can absolutely report him for this because he had no business barging in if he wasnât hunting and Pearl assures him that sheâll catch him sometime and talk about it privately. She likes to think he had good reason. He probably didnât. Martyn doesnât always think before he goes out wandering.
âWhyyyyy did he have a key?â Scott asks, trying a little too hard to sound casual about it. Pearl shrugs. She could lie to him, or she could be honest and it might be exactly what he needs to snap him out of allay brain (Itâs impossible not to notice how he follows her, always staying a little behind and to one side).
âGave it to him mid-Double Life for co-spawn roleplay.â
Scott freezes. Oh, yeah? Pearl turns on her heels, hands to hips. Her wings flap out to either side. âDonât ask if you donât want the answer, silly!â
He looks at her. He just⌠And she can see him rewiring his brain. The version of her his allay mind painted on a pedestal. The who she is doesnât fit with who he thought he was doing favors for. He should drop it (Whyâs he think he can ask?) but he says, âWhat?â
âCo-spawn roleplay. Came over and palled around; we pretended he sired my spark. Whatâs not to get? You and Cleo left us out in the cold, dude; we were lonely between sessions. Itâs a long time to wallow.â
He looks very fidgety now, so Pearl changes the subject. âWanna see my cobble baby?â You can paint them any way you like, but Pearl took her time and gave hers a proper face. Scrunched up nose and little bat ears, swaddled in its wings. She keeps it in a chest for when the nurse urges hit hardest beneath the waning moon.
âNot⌠really?â He rubs behind his neck. âYouâve made your point; that wasnât my business.â
âNope,â she says, grinning back at him. He makes a face. Scott tolerates the late-night bar conversations about what it might be like to have little sparks running around, but nursehoodâs not for him. Heâs a sire if heâs either one at all. Mob allays duplicate themselves without a partner, so maybe thereâs something in his instincts that feels like itâs kind of gross. Or itâs some suppressed dragon thing. Rebellion. Who knows.
