One of the reasons why I tend to like purely puzzle games like Sudoku and Picross is because a well made puzzle promises that they can be solved if you have the skills to do so. And when I talk about skills, I am not talking about intelligence, or a particular mindset. Often, it is more about experience than anything else.

Often these types of puzzles have a particular procedure in which you solve them, but the puzzle itself never tells you what the procedure is, it’s something you learn as you do easy puzzles and work yourself up to the harder ones. Whether it is working on the edges of a jigsaw puzzle, or running through each number first when starting a Sudoku puzzle. There are methodical methods to solving these types of puzzles.

That being said, the ironic part about me liking these types of puzzles is that I don’t really learn well by picking things up as I go. My pattern recognition tends to be really bad unless it’s pointed out to me first, or something I’ve been doing for a very long time. There’s a reason why point and click adventure games have gotten easier for me as I’ve gotten older, as for some god forsaken reason I never stopped playing these types of games despite being pretty bad at them for most of my childhood and young adulthood.

And I think about this often when I decide to play a puzzle game and hit a wall. Often due to me not really understanding what the game wants me to take away the puzzle previous to it. There is a reason why Squeakross has become my favourite Picross game. Not only are the puzzles really well thought out, but the developers had spelt out to me all the other methods on how to solve those puzzles that I never learnt before that point.
