Happy World Bee Day!!
Bees (especially bumblebees) have been one of my special interests for as long as I've lived in Aotearoa. I've made our yard into a pollinators' paradise complete with native flowers, bee houses, and bee baths in the summer months when bees are most active.
Bees are incredibly important in their own ecosystems, but they're doubly important to people. Although honey bees get the most credit, bumblebees are actually way better at pollinating! Their larger size and fuzzy bodies help them maximise how much pollen they move from plant to plant. There are even some crops that exclusively require the bumblebees' skills.
Unlike honey bees, whose stingers are ripped out when they sting a person, bumblebees do not die after stinging. However, it's extremely rare for bumblebees to sting in the first place!
These hard working fluff gals are so chill and laid back, most will let you hold them if you're gentle.
In summer, you may come across a bumblebee that seems lethargic. It's most likely due to heat exhaustion. You should gently scoop the bee to a safe space in the shade where it can rest and if you can offer it a small amount of water that helps too. (Note: Due to the fact they're covered in fluff, they can easily get weighed down and drowned if soaked in water. Always make sure your bee baths are not too deep!)
