i think it’d be really interesting to explore the potential of ivan being good w/taking good care of pets, in relation to how horrible he is with people; he’s abusive to others partly because he doesn’t respect people’s agency or autonomy, and thinks that he has the right to control them. he wants everyone to submit completely to his will.

but animals don’t have the same (level) of agency and consciousness that humans have (they do of course have will and should NOT be treated like creatures to be controlled, i’m saying that they ARE regardless of that fact). he wouldn’t face resistance from an animal because they don’t have the same cultural understanding of autonomy or the same relationship to independence as we do.

to him, what he does to people is just loving them. he doesn’t let them leave and controls them because he loves them; they just don’t know what’s good for them, so he has to do it. people, of course, will not like that! they should and they will resist and hate him for it. but if he keeps a pet inside, puts a collar on them, controls their routine, the animal won’t care much at all. i think it would be so intriguing to explore how that would enable his abusive behavior, and how it relates to his loneliness. individuals who struggle with social interaction often find more ease interacting with animals because they’re not human, and i think he would relate to that a lot. autistic ivan btw

(the rest of this is not pet related, but general character analysis) one of the reasons i love him so much even though he’s one of the worst people in the world is because of how fascinating he is as a character— is it not interesting to explore the psyche and relationships of someone who is so abusive, so deranged that they don’t have a single positive relationship in their life? someone that every person (save for one) fears due to the abuse they’ve inflicted? and the fact that he doesn’t see a problem with it at all. not only is that initial premise fascinating to me, but paired with his personality and the kind of person he thinks that he is— he’s not NECESSARILY/fully intentionally malicious; he convinces himself that he’s just acting in everyone’s best interest.

he’s constantly so isolated and alone as a consequence of his actions, and it’s interesting that i still manage to feel pity for him. obviously he’s a horrible, awful, abusive, murderous person, but because he’s a character and not a real person, i still feel sad seeing how isolated he is. he’s so utterly lonely. and from his (twisted) perspective, everyone hates and excludes him for practically no reason. it’s all because of ‘that america stealing all his friends’ before he can bond with them. he’s such an interesting character…. i haven’t even scratched the surface of my thoughts about this lol

not to mention in relation to rusame. everything i said in the third paragraph but add on the fact that his best relationship (in my headcanon obv) is also his worst enemy. an equally abusive and despicable person, but whose results are quite the opposite. also unspeakably lonely, but he does have the entire world at his beck and call because of his power. i can imagine how much russia must resent him for how they have the exact same tendencies, but america seems to be so successful and loved despite it. and their relationship is toxic too, of course.
