AnxietyWare Journal #3: Art!
Here's where I'm at after a bit of art experimentation.
Direction feels like a good fit - it's quick and scrappy (highest priority), reflects my personal doodle style well, and has scope to reflect the weird, surreal nature of anxiety dreams. Pinspiration board: https://www.pinterest.co.uk/thethirdkate/doodle-styles/
I had previously look at more nightmareish stuff - https://www.pinterest.co.uk/thethirdkate/nightmares/. It didn’t feel right - the game should be more weird than clichéd horror. The bright but super creepy feeling of Midsommar was another interesting direction, but the slow, tense build up that requires is a bad fit for the game’s frantic gameplay.
I'd still love to experiment further with how to introduce an increasing sense of unease as the game goes on, and have some ideas about how to incorporate that into this style.
But for now the main thing is to have enough direction to tidy up the minigames so far and get player feedback, and not get distracted/overwhelmed by art for too long.
