How did you end up with so many boop noodles?
BUCKLE DOWN FRIENDOS CAUSE THIS IS GONNA BE A LONG ONE
I know you’re probably wanting a short and sweet answer but I like telling my exact reasons as to why and how I got where I am
So back when I was a kid, I lived incredibly far away from town so I was basically stuck out at my house all the time. I gained an interest in animal documentaries because I grew up with dogs, and my older sister always had some sort of pet coming in and out of the house constantly so I wanted to learn about them and other animals.
Animals were my only companions back then, as at my moms house I was basically isolated and at my dads house I was grounded near consistently. I became obsessed with Steve Irwin. He was my idol, I adored how much passion and love he had for animals, reptiles especially. Where I live, we have tons of reptiles and I would spend most of my days catching and admiring the fence lizards and grassland racerunners. I watched documentaries religiously. Fast forward to when I moved out and got married, while my husband was at work I went to check the mail and found this guy on my porch:
Beautiful sonoran gopher snake! (This was 8 ish years ago i think). I sent the pic to hubby and he came home from work with a ten gallon glass fish tank. I started doing research on their care and found out it’s not recommended to keep wild caught animals (especially for beginner keepers), so we went and let him go.
Later that week I brought home Dante, my corn snake, from a local breeder. I absolutely fell in love with him, and found that I adored both him and the maintenance of his enclosure. After that I discovered ball pythons, and soon after that got Thresh, and then Leliana. I admit my care back then was less than sub par, Thresh and Leliana had regular refusals to eat. While looking up reasons as to why they refuse, people told me it was ‘normal’ for them to just not eat, even as babies. That didn’t fly with me, so I dug deeper, and that is when I stumbled upon minimalist keeping and thought “This doesn’t seem right”. My true passion came about when I started digging for more information and figured out how much more keepers could be doing for reptiles.
I started gaining interest in more species, all with different care, and doing as much as i could for them to give them enrichment. After that I started getting requests to do educational programs for kids, which just furthered my passion. I did the paperwork required to do educational sessions with kids in local schools and the orphanage, and was hooked. Kids are SO smart, and so curious. One of my favorite memories when doing one of these was asking “So what do we do when we see a wild snake that we can’t identify?”
and EVERY kid said “Walk away from it!” I was so so proud. They all learned so quickly too. Dante, of course, was a hit. He is my most calm snake and an excellent ambassador.
I enjoy not only having these guys as pets, but educating people about them, and as odd as it sounds one of my favorite things is setting up enclosures, cleaning and rearranging them. Its so so rewarding to see my animals be the ‘odd ones out’ in the hobby because I keep them in such a way that they show more natural behaviors.
TL;DR. Have loved animals my whole life, got into snakes, became passionate about learning about them and educating people about them. Got more as I love both the animals and the care put in to them.
