The announcement was made through the royal household, with official confirmation from Clarence House and Buckingham Palace, and was widely described by the press at the time as “the best kept secret in Britain” due to how little the public had known about the relationship beforehand.

The couple’s relationship had developed privately over the previous years. They were introduced in London social circles and became closer after Armstrong-Jones photographed Princess Margaret. In late 1959, he was invited to stay at Balmoral Castle, where he spent time within the royal environment under the assumption he was there for professional photographic work. Their relationship deepened away from public attention during this period.
