i agree w/ the majority of this bc i do wish it had been liz&patty to rescue kid, that would’ve made more sense and would’ve been great development for them! but i also don’t think it’s fair to dismiss the development it gave kid and black star.

Black Star and Kid have the most development of a majority of the characters. Liz and Patty got next to nothing (specifically Patty) except for an occasional flashback. I don’t even think Maka would have gotten the development (however half-assed it was sometimes) if she had not been the protag. 

Liz and Patty are arguably the most important people to Kid? They’re his weapon partners and it’s clear that the three of them have strong feelings for each other (i.e. Kid throwing the two of them out of the way the last split second before he’s sucked into the Book of Eibon, “I haven’t thanked him yet.”, Patty almost rushing out of weapon form to help Kid after his arm is cut off even though she’s more vulnerable in that state and him yelling at her to stay there, “We believe in you, Kid.”)

But we never even got a reunion scene, just the very half-assed and brief “I’m back. I’m sorry I made you guys worry.” before fighting Noah. Or any clear definition and development of their relationship with each other except for Liz’s reflection in Eibon.
