This powerful 1862 photograph by Alexander Gardner captures the aftermath of the West Woods at the Battle of Antietam.
The image highlights a stark "contrast" of the war: on the right is the fresh grave of Lt. John A. Clark (7th Michigan Infantry), while a fallen Confederate soldier lies in the foreground. The splintered tree behind them serves as a silent witness to the most intense "iron rain" of the bloodiest single day in American history.
