As Americans stew over the looming risk of job-stealing AI and data centers in their back yards, the feds are raising the alarm about a new
I think the thing that annoys me most about modern technology is the constant prompts when I open an app, program or website "hi! do you want to do this task or function?"
I am opening you because I already know what I want to use you for.
You are a tool that I am going to use. Nothing more. I don't need a thing to try and make me believe it's a friend.
I wouldn't want a hammer to talk to me and try and pre-empt what I'm going to use it for - especially if it's some obscure secondary function! - so I sure as shit don't want to hear the same from an excel spreadsheet or my fridge or my car!
I am ordering food. I click the option that wasnt doordash. I still have to login to doordash. And then it doesn't even benefit me a remember payment information. Fine. I click pay with card and type in the information. The only submit button says "add card" implying its being permanently saved. It doesn't work. I put everything in correctly. Doesn't matter. "Try a different payment method or try again later". Click Paypal. Paypal doesn't ask for my password, just sends a text without prompting. Fine. Put in the text code. That does not log me in. They give me the additional "options" to confirm my identity. The ONLY option there is to receive an email. I leave the app to open my email app, praying this doesn't break something. I could have sworn I made a secure password with 18 characters (including uppercase, lowercase, number, and special character) once. Anyone with access to my texts would also have access to my email. Both are on my phone.
Next time, I call in my pizza. I am prompted to press 1 for hours and 2 to place an order. I press 2. I am informed its possible to order online. I am tired.

new patches yippee!!!!
for those unfamiliar with luddism: tldr it's a 18th century worker's rights movement fighting against the rapid development of technology that was facilitating their exploitation and lower wages by breaking into factories and smashing machinery, neo-luddism is a reclaiming of the term "luddite", which became an insult for people who generally opposed technology.

i HATE my phone i HATE the internet i hate all of it. so much. now, im not referring to the fact that it brews hatred and insecurity and a distorted sense of reality. honestly, i'm not really talking about how addictive it is. I'm talking about how intertwined with our lives and NECESSARY it is at this point for people to own smartphones if they want to lead a life. like, sometimes I think: "well, i can just ditch my phone and get a flip phone" but i cant. because 2FA. because work. because if I ditch the phone, I ditch my life as I know it. Even one of those "only the essentials" rugged phones don't have the majority of utilities I need to live my life. Maybe four, five years ago they would have been fine, but now we need an app to park?? we're only accepting digital payments through phone wallets?? wifi and iphones are packaged into one, inseperably??
Like, okay, so if I get rid of this fuckass hateful addicting piece of shite designed to brainwash me into partaking in american crapitalism, I can't park, I can't go in this store, I lose work opportunities because of lack of 2FA, I lose friends because we're all so *in the loop* that being out of it feels like you're on a completely different planet?? Smartphones at this point have a monopoly over our fucking lives.
Also, they strive in that anyone who thinks they suck and ditches them a) becomes a social reject because of lack of tools to approach the world and b) has no platform to spread this message, thereby creating a pro-phone echo loop.
Is this *not* dystopian to you guys??? We didn't even see it happen and suddenly our lives are trapped in a plastic rectangle.
