Spent all of yesterday and some of today processing and analyzing the Mt. Bachelor data. I'm planning to include a few figures for my talk at AAAR in two weeks. The RNA and DNA communities are distinct and well-separated on the ordinations, an encouraging result.
I finished uploading ARMO metagenome sequences for now, about 1/3 of the data. I was trying to upload half but apparently that nearly filled the temporary storage space for MG-RAST web uploads. Our collaborators at MG-RAST and Emily Schwarz here at UO are will start processing the data soon. Half of the data will be processed at ANL and the other half using "spot" instances on the Amazon cloud. We're shooting for a 2-3 month turnaround for the entire 2TB.
Kyla, Adam, and I worked on our microbiology lab techniques today. We streaked plates to use in the UV lightbox experiment. Four of the strains (Deinococcus, Streptococcus, Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas) grow well on plates. We'll use this method to harvest cells from these strains to inoculate the light box surfaces. Methylobacteria grows very slowly on plates, so this strain will be grown in broth. A trial run of the experiment could happen as early as the end of the week.
