From the second chapter of Pass the Existential Dilemma, Would You? (aka Anakin and Barriss go undercover as a couple):
“Untouched?” Anakin asks, with the air of a man only passingly interested.
This man is their mark. Everything he does is of interest.
The trandoshan laughs again. “Of course not! Need a girl with experience, if you’re going to be spending money. I want my money’s worth from a whore.”
“I see our tastes are pretty different,” Anakin says. He pinches Barriss’s cheek with a mean little grin. “We liked our fresh start, didn’t we, baby?”
“Mm-hm,” she mumbles, turning her head to press a kiss to his palm. It doesn’t feel as unnatural as last night, even when he crushes her to his chest and knocks back another drink. “Waiter!”
“The waiter’s busy,” their mark says. “Send your gal over; she’s certainly trained enough to not muck the order up.”
Anakin and Barriss are on a mission, undercover. Barriss insisted on doing this, but she may have bit off more than she can chew.
AKA: This is what happens when two people, who are both having doubts about their shared faith, have some conversations about that while in a high-pressure situation.
This fic is me trying to get into the head of Barriss as she's losing faith in the Jedi, but before she's actually there, and doing some risky things in her attempts to find that justification.
Written for the "Undercover" prompt of Anakin rarepair week! I didn't finish this in time, so you're just getting the first act for now.
I was a bit hesitant at writing certain parts of this fic, because I know Barriss is a high risk for accidental implications wrt to Islam due to how she was handled in canon, and any fic with her that isn't just pure fluff needs a second thought. Unfortunately, the people I reached out to were unable to get back to me in time, but I'm hoping they can look over the remaining chapters before I post.
Obviously, as this is a canonverse fic, she isn't actually Muslim, but the coding of her character and its effects need to be considered when writing.
I'm hoping the contrast with/existence of the Luminara fic from a few days ago, and the very internal focus Barriss has (as it's her POV and the driving non-ship plot is about her coming to terms with knighthood in an Order she's not sure is on the right path anymore) are enough to avoid those implications.
Hopefully, this disclaimer, the wider context, and my attempts to keep the character internally consistent add up to a portrayal that does not incidentally cross into iffy territory.

The Windwalker fic has politics but it's a comedy, I swear
The only fics that aren't primarily romcom this week are the Luminara and Barriss fics, because one is about falling in love with a man so recently widowed that he is still deep in mourning, and the other is about a crisis of faith that has the potential to spiral out into galactic consequences but is, in the moment, just two people trying their hardest to be better than they are and find a way to move forward.
