"Zuko-...wait" you pulled away from the kiss while taking small breaths.
"What⦠what is it."
"....it's.. it's just.. this is wrong.. you can't have me I'm to be married to someone else-"
"Then be with me."
"I can't."
"Why not.." He looked down over you and watched as your face shifted through emotions from confusion and guilt to sadness.
"It's just."
"...because of what....because I'm from the Fire Nation? The Fire Lord?"
"No no it's not."
"...I don't care if you're from another place than me.." Looking up at him, his low eyes felt like home. Maybe you were going crazy. āIf someone were to care Iāll take care of them.ā
"Even if that wasn't the case it wouldn't be allowed. What you did here.. no one would let you break my engagement."
"But you can." His words made you pause. He was right. If it were you who cut off your betrothal. It would go through. But who would approve of you leaving with him?
"but-"
"Please Y/N." He moved off the door and let go of you, giving you a few steps of space to see the room a bit more.
"Please.ā
āZuko-ā
āMarry me instead." Kneeling in front of you, he opened his hand letting you see what he was holding. It was a betrothal necklace. So much was happening at once.
"You don't have to say anything right now." He put the necklace in your hand letting you hold it. You lightly moved your thumb over the circle feeling the engraving. It was a stone with a mix of both the water and fire emblem carved into it.
From what you could see with the candle light, the band had a black ribbon while the stone was a pretty blush pink color with an almost marble design.
"I know it's a tradition here and not for me⦠but I tried my best."
"How did you carve it."
"..It took a lot of work... Aang helped with some water bending to get it smooth. But over all, I did it with tools and my fire. It took quite a bit of trial and error. I wanted to make sure it was perfect."
"..how did you find the time to do all of this?" You looked at him in awe.
"I started yesterday night. But got serious about it after what happened this morning at your house.. the reason I wasnāt in my room when you came to get me.ā
"..." You couldn't say anything. He worked so hard on this for you, got the day planned and the room all perfect just for you to give him a none answer instead of a hug, smile, and a kiss?
āI know i fucked up.. What can I do to make it up to you? I'll give you anything, name it and itās yours.ā
Your emotions were torn between what was right for your home, and what you felt right now. But he just got here and wants to marry you? The one who helped those other benders attack that day? Your mind started to race, making you angry, until you looked at him. He had this begging and pleading look on his face. For him to have helped do such terrible things that day and look at you like this...
"That day... where were you when you attacked."
"The day of the attack... I was hunting the avatar. I snuck in from underwater and went directly for him."
"What were you wearing?"
"....what does this have to do with-."
"Zuko, just tell me."
".... It was white colored clothes to separate me from the others. To not draw any attention."
"White..." Your heart dropped. The man who burned you had on black, a Fire Nation uniform underclothes. Your thoughts rushed over trying to make sure you were remembering things right.Ā
"I never stopped for anything the Fire Nation was doing unless I had to. That's why I had a hard time believing I'd attacked you that day. I went in there for Aang and nothing else. I wasn't even the one to kill the moon spirit."
You felt like you were going to be sick. All this time you thought he was the reason all of this even happened. The reason you were burned. The reason your family was killed. But all he did that day was go after the avatar.
Looking down at the necklace and back at him you watched his hopeful expression as it began to disappear. He watched as tears started to fall down your eyes. To try and comfort you, he stood, reaching out to wipe them. But instead of letting him touch you, you moved back while opening the door and running out, leaving him there speechless.
He stood there confused and heart broken with tears in his eyes as he watched the door close behind you.
You ran back to your house and closed the door trying not to make a scene and wake up your Lee one room over. So, you quietly made your way to the bathroom to clean yourself up.
Standing in the mirror, you let your mind take over, dissecting every minute detail of that day. It checked out, he hadnāt even seen you before a few days ago.
You sat alone in the tub with your thoughts and wants before thinking long and hard about a real answer.
"Why did I run from him like that...I'm such an idiot."
You held your face in your hands and cringed about the way you just left him hanging. You looked at the necklace, laying there besides your old oneĀ on the counter as you thought about it. But how could you speak to him again?
After the bath you made your way to bed and tried to get as much shut eye as possible.
ā
The next morning
āāāā
You woke up knowing just what you'd do today. You put on your betrothed necklace then fixed your clothing and hair to look as perfect as you could get it.
As your job, you went and got the Avatar from his room. Your sabotage from the other night was fixed faster than expected. Walking with him down the hall towards the Fire Lords room, he finally spoke revealing what has been eating at him all morning.
"Hey miss y/n.. so uh...what happened between you and Zuko last night." Aang was a little hesitant to ask since he didn't know if you'd want to talk about it or not. There was a pause before you spoke wondering if you wanted to tell him what was on your mind.
"...it was alright.. but I'll tell you a secret.ā Stopping, you turned to him. āAnd no matter what, do not tell Lord Zuko." The look on your face was as serious as could be. "Not until you're back in the Fire Nation." He nodded and stood, leaning in to hear it.
You leaned in closer and whispered. He gasped and looked at you, seeing the still serious look on your face as you chuckled, breaking character for a second as you started to walk again. "Remember not to tell him."
"But this is so huge. Why can't I tell him!? Please come on."
"Not until he's at home."
"ah fineee." He crossed his arms and walked with you not knowing if he'd be able to hold the secret in for so long.
Once you got to Zuko's door, you knocked and waited for him to open it. Once he did, you both looked at each other, instantly making eye contact but you soon looked away after a second, unable to hold it with the tension in the air.
"It's time to go." Your guards walked with the three of you after gathering their things. Aang, Zuko, and the guards followed you through the halls and out of the. The whole time, Zuko just kept looking at you, wanting to say something but kept from it. You just kept walking.
He wondered what you thought of his proposal and hoped it wasn't too much to swallow.Ā
Once you lead them to the ship. You said your goodbyes to Aang but when Zuko waved and said his round of goodbyes and thanks to everyone, you gave him a slight bow.
You avoiding him even in the slightest put the cherry on top, making him believe that there was nothing he could do to save your relationship.
As he and Aang got on the ship, he turned to look at you one last time. But, you turned your head to look the other way. Though when you did, something caught his eye. Being at a more elevated level, he could see past your full fur collar, he could see your betrothed necklace. But it was different.
"Wait." The ship was fully bordered and already starting to leave the dock. "Wait!" He ran to the end of the ship to try and look down at you one more time. As he did he got one last glimpse at your neck.Ā
Just as he thought, your necklace was now a blush pink replacing its old blue color.

He wasn't seeing things. What he saw was as clear as day and night. The necklace was the same color as the one heād just proposed to you with last night. He couldn't believe it.
As you turned and walked away, he tried to call out to you, but either the ship was too loud or you didn't want to react to what he might say.
Zuko ran to try and get to the captain of the ship, but was stopped by Aang.
"Not right now Aang. I gotta stop the ship."
"No."
"Why not."
"Because I can't let you go back."
"What are you talking about? She was wearing my necklace. She wants to get married so I'm not leaving her here."
"She doesn't want you to take her."
"What do you mean⦠What did you talk with her about." He calmed and stood looking down at him confused.
Aang almost let it slip until he remembered what you said about waiting. "..I can't tell you."
"And why not."
"Because she told me not to say anything until you get home."
"That's ridiculous. We're here and I can take her away from this. She wants marriage so why not-."
"Zuko. I can't explain why but she wants you to wait until you get home." As upset as he was about it, he made himself respect what you wanted.
Walking to the side of the ship, he watched as the Northern gates slowly disappeared out of view. He wished he could go back to you, but in order to know why he canāt, he had to be patient. But he did push the ship's crew to their limits so they could move the ship as fast as they could.
As soon as he got back, he ran through the welcome backs and went straight to his palace where he and Aang could talk alone.

Zukos POV
ā-
Once I got inside the palace, I didn't even need to ask him. He just spat it out.
"Ok, so in the hall before we picked you up from your room, Miss y/n told me to tell you once you got home, that she said yes to your proposal. She said she was going to send a letter here early in the morning so it would get here before us, but she showed me the necklace you had given her was around your neck and trusted me with the letter instead." He pulled out a letter from his clothes and handed it to me.
I wasted no time after gathering what he was rambling about, and took the letter opening it frantically.
I broke the wax on the envelope and took a few steps to the side. Once I opened it, I stood still and read it into myself.
-Dear Zuko.
Yes, my answer is yes. I will marry you. I'm sorry for running away from you so suddenly but if I were to keep my composure, I wouldn't know what to do with myself.
As you know, the Fire Nation doesn't have the best history here. So dropping someone from my home to marry the Fire Lord, as head of defense and a branch of the royal line, I need you to understand that that may ruin the way my people look at me and my family name.Ā
I also need to know that I am not making a grave mistake, loving you and leaving everything I know for something that sprung on me in only a few days.
So, in return for my hand in marriage I ask you to do this for me. Do what you and the Avatar have already planned and with everything in your power, help heal my land along with others that your nation has hurt. There is so much remaining hurt here that you still havenāt seen. Come back to me the day after your 21st birthday and I'll say my full hearted answer to your question.
Three years to show me just how much you have changed and show my kingdom that this isnāt a mistake. Until then, I will be watching what good you will do and waiting for you.Ā
Doing it this way, it gives both of us plenty of time to know just what we want.Ā
No rush.Ā
Love,
Y/n
I read through the letter happily but also sad. I have her set to be mine and only mine. But I must prove myself to her that I have changed and within 3 years. This was fair. My people have done so much harm to her. Scared her, traumatized her. Accepting love from their leader canāt be an easy thing to ask.
"Not a problem."
I quickly wrote down a letter in response and sent it on its way.Ā
"It's set. She will be mine in three years." I smiled to myself, happy to know that I had her.

Y/n's POV
ā-
Ā About a day after he left I received a letter. After reading it, I smiled widely with nothing but joy in my heart.
-My love,
I accept your request and will do everything within my power to make the world I have hurt better. I can't wait to see you again and hold you close in my arms. But, I will be patient and respectful to what you want in exchange for your hand in marriage.
As bad as I want you now, I will see you in 3 years. Not a day late.
With all my love,
Zuko
You held it close to your chest and let giggles fill your bedroom. You were beyond happy and like Zuko, couldn't wait for the years to be up.
On your end of the agreement, you dropped your engagement with Lee and started to train the warriors harder and tougher in need of someone to take your place when you leave. Because, once he comes to get you, you'll have to step down from your position.

3 years later
āāāāā
Over the time span of 3 years, Zuko has done phenomenal in making the world better. From just at your walls, you've seen Fire Nation ships bring resources from their land to help the war affected sick and poor. Aboard those ships was also another type of cargo.
Zuko slid a note to one of his guards to give you yours. Your guard would rush to you on top of the walls after seeing that the letter was from the Fire Lord. As you read each and every letter from your spot at the top of the gates, you'd chuckle and do as the letter said, looking closely at the ship windows, the side of the ship, the dock, wherever each letter would say he would be there waving with a big smile on his face as soon as your eyes landed down on him. Heād either be in a regular worker's or guard attire trying to blend in with the rest of the shipās crew just to get a little closer to you. Before the ships would leave, you'd quickly write something in response and put the paper from him away safe for you to keep.Ā
It wasnāt every ship, but seeing him at the most random times on those ships would warm your heart each and every time, making each Fire Nation supply drop off more exciting than it should.
