    While Dmitri had heard about the EARTHQUAKE and the fissures in the earth, this was the first time he had actually been near one of them.

    He understood that SOMETHING was spilling out into Hawkins, but he wasn't exactly in a place to know what that was exactly or how it got this bad. Being left out of the explanations wasn't something he was BITTER over, but it wasn't helping his situation any. Or his understanding of how to deal with this or what exactly he could DO. He often left to see what he could do in what remained of the town when the waiting and tension got to him a little too much, but the virtue of just being in town sometimes offered him more questions he didn't have answers for.

    Still, he knew enough to not get too close, though sometimes he would catch people lingering a little too close to the openings.

“HM.” Murray allowed himself to grin at Alexei’s comment. It was true; they hadn’t known each other for long. But, unlike with most people, Murray DID want to know Alexei more. They had a lot in common already — they were both geniuses who spoke Russian.

    Naturally, Dmitri had regarded the sudden box on his doorstep with some SUSPICION. Boxes just showing up ALWAYS meant trouble, in his experience. It took him a couple moments to really approach it, trying to see if there was anybody lingering nearby.

    Though, the card quickly eased that worry in him after he finally approached the box and picked up the note–admittedly, his curiosity was piqued. It had been quite a while since anybody had baked him something in particular. He picked up the package, heading back inside as he unwrapped it, the cake inside putting a small grin on his face. He did have a particular weakness for baked goods.

Dmitri actually doesn’t know a good half of his family on his mother’s side. He’s aware of a couple great aunts, uncles, and distant cousins, but he’s never met them. His maternal grandparents were casualties in the years as a result of the civil war and his mother was raised up as a street kid, in-and-out of orphanages and in particular a foster home where she worked as a laborer along with a couple other children who were fostered there before the reforms to the program for orphans came about. (Not that it helped much in her lifetime.) The rest of her family, at least as far as he can assume, either fled or died while in gulags during the second world war for being German. 

She’s talked to him in bits and pieces about that, but Dmitri knows she keeps a lot of her opinions and experiences to herself. Regardless, she’s inspired a good amount of contempt for his government. However, due to the oppression and paranoia about being taken for political opposition, which could extend to his family, Dmitri’s learned how to mask that. There is also a number of years where he apathetically resigned to the situation he was in following his years as a military conscript, which only reinforced his opinions but that was always kind of at odds with a hopelessness that he developed over his life. (That's a while headcanon on its own.) It’s actually pretty deeply ingrained in him that he carries the notion with him for a long while in his adult life, even after escaping the S.oviet Union.
