I met a beautiful soul today, at Target. I’ve been having issues with body image all day today, for the silly reason that I couldn’t find clothes that fit me in any store. Lemme tell ya, it’s hard to shop for a rave outfit right when autumn comes around!
My boyfriend did his best to make me feel better, even while he was at work. Reaffirmed his love for me, and told me I’m always beautiful. While a appreciated his words and support, I couldn’t bring myself to really believe him.
After my third trip to the fitting room just at that store, I finally broke down crying. I’ve probably looked in 6 fitting room mirrors prior. I felt defeated. I felt gross. I got so upset that I wanted to - and thought I was going to - puke.
Then, I heard her voice just softly trying to get my attention. She asked me if I was okay. I explained how I was feeling. To a total stranger. And she just nodded, and met me on my level. We talked for a good five minutes... Her parting words were “keep your chin up, and know you’re not alone.” It made me smile, even if it was weak at the time.
I don’t know what her name was. But her face is burned into my memory. I’m very thankful she was there.
