Angelonia angustifolia angustifolia (Summer snapdragon)

Angelonia has only been commercially available since the late-1990′s and I was a little surprised to run into this mass planting. I found it in front of a local seniors activity center and obviously someone in their garden club has adventurous tastes. This plant likes a sunny location and Vancouver’s unusually hot, dry summer has been perfect for this native of northwestern Brazil. Distantly related to snapdragons, Angelonia is an excellent, long-lasting cut flower and it’s foliage imparts a pleasant ‘grape soda’ fragrance.
