Today I found one of my favourite chairs in one of the ORs, and the rest of the ORs didn't have my favourite chair in them, so I dragged it along with me for the rest of the 12 hour shift

as i’ve been writing lately, i’d like to take a moment to share some info that i’ve learned first-hand about a very specific topic writers might struggle to put into words: waking up from anesthesia. the source? a surgery i needed to get just days after seeing a doctor. it was a time. 🙂‍↕️

- the moment i woke up wasn’t some crazy trippy dream thing. it was definitely a fade-in kind of wake, where i slowly woke up from a heavy sleep.

- the post-wake drowsiness is real. i went in and out a few times, one time closing my eyes and then seeing a new nurse, not having a good idea of how much time had gone by (it was probably just a few moments - i was in post-op for less than an hour).

-pre-op: pre-operation: vitals check, giving you the IV to start feeling relaxed, confirming what procedure you’re having done

-post-op: post-operation: vitals checking, getting you a snack, getting your papers signed so you can be discharged

- i was so focused on making sure i showed everyone that the anesthesia wasn’t effecting me that i just kept talking. with every nurse that came by to check on me. i asked their names and made small talk. i was doing the same thing with the pre-op nurses, but i’m sure this time was a little different due to the anesthesia. i slowly became aware of how much i was talking.

- yes i do remember some conversations i had and what i said. i still think I answered pretty true to how i normally would.

- going back to the post-wake drowsiness: i asked one of the nurse’s what her name was and she told me it. keep in mind it was also dark in the post-op area since everyone else who had had same-day operations were just waking up. a short moment went by and i thought i thought another nurse had walked in, so i asked her what her name was. it was still the same girl.

- one of the nurses who saw me pre-op came around to see me out, and i remembered the conversation we’d had before the surgery and i followed up on it

- me, acting like a dramatic grey’s anatomy character: go buy that house 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🗣️🗣️ (i hope she did she was so wonderful to me during pre-op)

- i still remember they gave me options for a snack and even though they said they’d get me the goldfish and apple juice they brought me graham crackers and either cranberry or grape juice - which is where i got the idea to have the same thing happen to yelena in this fic where she’s in the hospital.

15 patients who were undergoing plastic surgery were filmed whilst be induced with Propofol - The general anaesthetic agent.

"These films are 100% real. 15 Woman were filmed over a period of 10 months. They were all undergoing breast augmentation / reconstruction - as you can see from the markings on their chest. Each of the patients were advised to look into the camera and try to stay awake as long as possible - The induction agent was Propofol.”
