To much applause and media coverage, Linde announces major scholarship program in Mexico
With hundreds attending, including the Governor of the State of Campeche, its Education Secretary and the Secretary of Economic Development, Linde recently announced an ambitious and impressive initiative to offer 40 full college scholarships to low-income children in Mexico.
The program, called Linde Scholars, is intended to help students who wish to study engineering at the Universidad de Monterrey in Campeche. It includes tuition, housing, a study semester in Germany, mentoring with Linde volunteers (online, with executives from the Bridgewater, New Jersey headquarters) meals, academic materials and transportation.
The official launch of the program was so big, and so festive, that it had to be held at a convention center. In all, some 270 people attended, of which 130 were students who took the entrance exam for the scholarship. In attendance were members of the national and local media, the president of the college and numerous local and high-ranking state officials, including the Secretary of Economic Development of the State of Campeche and representatives from the Cantarell nitrogen plant.
Speaking in Spanish, Andy Ripley, Plant Manager at Cantarell, said that when he took on the challenge of leading the plant, “I also agreed to come to live in Campeche, and I have been very happy. Here I found friends - generous, good people, and I can tell you without any reserve that Campeche is a great state … Nothing gives me more satisfaction than to be able to share with you that our company is willing to contribute to the development of Campeche through our Social Responsibility programs and this alliance with Universidad de Monterrey.”
Added Social Responsibility & Government Relations Manager Lorena De Lima, “Media coverage was extensive, and so throughout Mexico, government officials and the public are becoming more and more aware of our commitment towards helping the community, economic development and transforming the health and welfare of people in the State of Campeche.”
