Swings Both Ways

LECTURE 9: BIRTH OF BEATLEMANIA: Here’s a wonderful documentary on the beloved Beatles song “Love Me Do,” recorded September 11, 1962. The song climbed to #17 on the British music charts in October 1962. It was the first big hit for The Beatles, and it would reach #1 in the United States a mere two years later. You’ll notice this is my kind of history – it focuses on the legendary tune, but places it in historical perspective. It very effectively conveys the feel of 1962, that electric and magical moment before The Beatles became a global phenomenon. There’s a delightful interview with Pete Best, too, recounting the original Decca audition. Another great interview spotlights Iris Fenton, an early girlfriend of Paul McCartney, who describes the period so vividly. Also keep an eye out for session drummer Andy White, who filled in for Ringo on the recording of “Love Me Do.”

How Do You Sleep? [Instrumental Score] - John Lennon, The Plastic Ono Band & The Flux Fiddlers (1971, remixed 2006)
A gem of a remix, hidden in plain sight on the OST of the film The U.S. Vs. John Lennon. A stunning groove by John, George, Klaus, Nicky Hopkins, and Alan White.
The Beatles recorded three versions of "Love Me Do" with three different drummers. At their first Parlophone audition in June 1962, Pete Best was still their drummer. The second was Andy White and when they recorded it on September 4, Ringo Starr was their drummer.
