Long-time member of People’s Power Assembly Baltimore, Andre Powell, highlighted Duterte’s dependence on US aid and raised the necessity to pass the PHRA. He made clear that the Filipino government has always relied heavily on U.S. military and financial assistance to put down popular dissent: in 2016 alone, $120 million was given to the Duterte administration in the form of military aid. “None of the aid has trickled down to the working class in terms of higher livable wages, safe working condition and labor rights,” said Powell.

Speakers: ANDRE POWELL is a leader in the LGBTQ2S movement.  He was a founder of Labor for Reparations and traveled to the South African Durban world conference on racism. Powell resides in Baltimore and is an organizer for Socialist Unity Party and the Peoples Power Assembly.  He has been in the streets leading protests ever since George Floyd was murdered. LIZZ  TOLEDO is a Latinx LGBTQ2S fighter who lives in Atlanta. She is the founder of the Atlanta Peoples Power Assembly which took up the case of Renardo Lewis, who was assaulted by the police. Toledo also contributes to Struggle-La Lucha and is with the Socialist Unity Party. BOB McCUBBIN is the author of the new book 'The Social Evolution of Humanity: Marx and Engels were right!' and wrote the ground-breaking book the 'The Roots of Lesbian & Gay Oppression, A Marxist View.' Unity against the capitalist onslaught of sanctions against the countries of Africa will lead to the ultimate victory of their right to self-determination, free from imperialist control. That same unity will beat back the racist atrocities in this country, whether they are from the barrel of a gun or institutionalized in written policies of the government.

Upon reaching the prison complex, protesters stopped to give a solidarity message to those behind the walls. These solidarity speeches are done every time a march goes through the complex to let the inmates know they are not forgotten. The inmates can always be heard responding to the chants and the speeches, shouting back, “Thank you!”
