blue/yellow symbolism in Heartstopper
Episode 8
I am very excited to get into this episode. While the last episode was very blue and the climactic moment of the season, this episode is very yellow as it represents a hopeful ending.
Let’s start with our gals! I don’t focus much on the Sports Day colouring because there is almost TOO much blue and yellow (and red). The girls are wearing yellow, red/maroon, and blue. This could indicate that as everyone becomes the best and happiest versions of themselves, they learn to embrace all sides of themselves - the good, the bad, and the in between.
[Side note: I didn’t attach a picture but I’m fairly certain the bench Charlie stands on while he watches Nick play rugby is yellow.]
Time to focus on the ending <33333 And what a lovely ending it was.
The lighting in my photo does ont reflect it, but we see Nick wearing a light purple sweater. This is the first time he wears purple in the series and it happens to be in a scene where he gets to finally be out and happy with his boyfriend.
In the photobooth, there is a yellow light glowing behind the boys :)
Nick’s mum - the queen of solidarity - wearing a yellow and purple sweater, mirroring her son’s wardrobe. It is no coincidence that his mother has a positive and supportive reaction to his coming out while wearing these colours.
AND OF COURSE, THE YELLOW FRICKIN SHIRT! This shirt is literally the entire reason I started this series. We see it in all of the pictures before this but the shirt needs attention. Nick is planning to be out to the most important people in his life, he is in love with liking Charlie, he likes “Charlie Spring in a romantic way, not just a friend way!” and proclaims it to the sea. He is at his happiest and that yellow shirt visually portrays that.
To echo the sentiments from the first picture in this post, Nick and Charlie lay on yellow and blue towels. Nick’s is the blue and Charlie’s is the yellow, the theme continuing throughout the series. However, in this clip, they are majority laying on the blue. Again, I think this indicates that blue is not something to entirely shy away from. We can embrace those darker sides of ourselves because they are what make us the people that we are.
