Anders found Kazuo sitting on the front porch swing, waiting for Ian to come home, “Hey, can I ask you something?” “Of course!” Anders settled into one of the chairs, “From day one, you've been so enthusiastic about being my dad. Why? I'm not related to you by blood.”
Kazuo leaned back, the swing rocking gently, “No, we’re not blood related, but you're still my kid. And you are Ian’s, and he's my partner. I'm glad I get to be your dad…” He smiled a bit sadly, “It's not something I ever thought I'd have the chance to do.”
“Why? Because you're gay?” Anders figured that was the most obvious answer. “Well, that's part of it. The biggest part is,” Kazuo stared out at the road, watching a car pass by, “That my dad is a complete monster.” “What do you mean?” Anders leaned forward.
“Well,” Kazuo sighed softly, “The man hated me. He hated me from the second he knew I existed…and Ian was able to confirm that. He told me how angry he was about my mom's pregnancy. I guess my first actual memories of him were…I had to have been a toddler. He didn't speak to me directly unless it was to yell. He'd tell Mama to ‘get her son under control.’ He waited to start hitting me until after she died..”
Ian, attempting to help Anders with his physics homework: I'm not great at science. All I can remember is that inertia is a property of matter, and -
Kazuo: BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY.
Anders, immediately: BILL BILL BILL BILL.
Ian, old and British: What in the...?
Kazuo: Oh my god, that activated me like a sleeper agent.
Anders: I had a middle school science teacher who'd wheel in the A/V cart and throw in the episode about the moon whenever she was hungover. It's in my head forever.

Anders is slightly better at cooking than Kazuo. Ian tried with Anders. Gav tried with Anders. Anders can boil eggs and cook box mac and cheese and not much else. Sometimes he shows up to work with a lunch bag containing several Lunchables, which is tragic. He's lucky Dermot can cook.
Kazuo cannot cook. Kazuo can and has fucked up Easy Bake Oven recipes.
If you put Anders and Kazuo in the kitchen, just the two of them, their collective number of braincells plummets into the negative. Kazuo does not believe in recipes and Anders thinks the measurements are a suggestion. Former bartender and an air traffic control supervisor egging each other on.
One time they almost managed to make a cake for Ian's birthday. Almost. Then they started hucking frosting at each other.

Kazuo awoke to the smell of sausage frying and sat up, inhaling deeply. If Ian was up and cooking, that meant he was feeling okay…right? As he stood and dressed, Kazuo knew he had to talk with Ian. They'd made up after their fight - the fight he’d caused, but Kazuo still worried that he'd fucked things up between them. It had been their first actual fight, after all.
A bit nervously, he made his way downstairs. Ian was at the stove, flipping pancakes. Anders was already out, his skateboard gone from by the front door, and Kazuo figured he was already out with Mark and Steve. A bit tentatively, he stepped into the kitchen, “Good morning.” Ian turned, the smile on his face one of love, but Kazuo could see the vague undercurrent of worry in his expression.
Kazuo averted his gaze, a hot flush of embarrassment working up his face, “I…need to apologize again…” Ian began moving the pancakes to a plate, not saying anything before taking the food to the table. “I know I can be a hothead…and a shithead…and I'm sorry I upset you.” “Sit, let's have breakfast,” Ian’s voice was soft, and Kazuo did as he was told. Ian served him - sausage, scrambled eggs and pancakes, “Kazuo…”
