Brighouse Bay, nr. Borgue, Dumfries and Galloway
Small-scale archaeological evaluations at Brighouse Bay have uncovered localized, albeit fragmentary, evidence of later prehistoric and Iron Age occupation. Nearby coastal defensive earthworks and promontory sites—such as Borness Batteries overlooking the bay—typify the defensive and settlement patterns of second-millennium and first-millennium BCE communities along the Solway coast. Unusually, the local dune sites also yielded unusual post-prehistoric/Romano-British artifact depositions, including a rare counterfeit coin-casting die pointing to indigenous manipulation of Roman-era trade networks.
