I visited the tiny, lovely Prague Tolkien con, and I was so inspired by the people there that....I started sketching Silmarillion scenes once again. So here goes Ancalagon the Black ♥
The War of Wrath or Eärendil's Return
(omg i am so bad at posting my art in a timely fashion) Anyway, I was very happy to create the cover for last autumn's Flammifer (the magazine of the German Tolkien society. It is a sister piece to my Eärendil art that I made for the cover of Amon Hen, which showed Eärendil's voyage and sacrifices and how people on Arda call out to him from his view. In this image we see him from the perspective of everyone that looks for him in the night sky, as a eucatastrophe returning for a last time.
The existence of Ancalagon is horrifying in every way. To anything and everything he encounters and for himself.
Ancalagon is an anomaly. Far too large to live in any meaningful way. He was born to die in the War of Wrath and to take as much of the world with him as he could.
He is created from thousands of parts. He is erratic, fragmented. He is constantly in agony.
Dozens, perhaps hundreds died in his development. Elven thralls who were forced to aid in and die for the creation of a weapon meant to destroy their homes and people. Those some of his parts came from. Those who simply got too close.
Bones fracture when his wings expand, acrid blood falls from the sky, staining the rocks of Thangorodrim, long before Eärendil lands a single wound to him
His flesh and bones poison the earth, the sky, the water.
His entire existence is cruel and sad and painful and destructive.
Working on a watercolour of Ancalagon the Black for the 2027 Beyond Bree Tolkien calendar. The blue stuff is rubber masking fluid. I also experimented with salt to give the wet-in-wet parts some more texture. Now come the scales and a small brush ...

redraw of my sister’s (@rath0’s) Morgoth mii and the little baby Ancalagon I drew for him (it turned out so chopped in-game I had to try to redeem myself. at least he liked it!)

3/3 for @perlen-gold an unofficial @silmarillionstockings for this prompt:
Melkor and Mairon angbanging very much under the protective fold of wings of Ancalagon the Black or any other dragon?
