Winslow Homer American 1836-1910 “Crossing the Pasture” 1871-72 Oil on canvas Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr Children were seen as a poignant symbol of the nation's future in the years following the Civil War, because of its devastating death toll. Homer was one of many artists and writers, including Mark Twain and Louisa May Alcott, who celebrated the "cult of childhood" in their work. While Homer's charming vignette commemorates youthful innocence in an idyllic rural landscape, a sense of disquiet seeps into the picture. The figures, standing close together, wear uneasy expressions, with the older boy seeming to serve as a protective presence in relation to his young charge. Eastman Johnson (1824-1906) “Mother's Darling (Bo-Peep)” 1872 Oil on composition board mounted to panel Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr Sentimental scenes of everyday life, such as this depiction of the game bo-peep (or as we know it today, peek-a-boo), were popular in the post-Civil War years as an antidote to societal tension. Here Johnson reinforces the Victorian belief in the sanctity of the family by painting references to Christianity throughout the composition. (He may have used his own daughter and his wife as models for his figures of domestic togetherness.) For example, the ornately carved prie-dieu (a kneeling bench for prayer) holds the family bible, and the outline of a cross, subtly illuminated, appears on the closed shutters above the figures. Thomas Hovenden (1840-1895) “Chloe and Sam” 1882 Oil on canvas Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr After moving to Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania, in 1881, Hovenden created a series of paintings as a tribute to the town's proud heritage of abolitionism. In several of these works, Hovenden painted his neighbor, Sam Jones, a freed black man who had arrived in Plymouth Meeting before the Civil War. Though they may have featured real people, these paintings are also likely artful inventions, with characters and scenes of the type Harriet Beecher Stowe made memorable in her critique of slavery, Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852). Perhaps the name Chloe in the painting's title refers to Aunt Chloe, a character in Stowe's book who brings to light the devastating hardships of the black women who were the backbone of many antebellum Southern households.
