Birthday Blues | Chrom & Robin
How embarrassing. Robin thought to himself, cringing as he held the box tightly in his hands. Having been overwhelmed with work per usual, he hadnât noticed Chromâs birthday come and go. Now those hurtful glances the prince had been sending his way made sense. GodsâŚIâm surprised Chrom hasnât confronted me or worse, break up with me on his birthday when I didnât do a thing to celebrate. He thought to himself, taking in a deep breath. Well, all I can do now is to try and make it right.
âChrom?â He entered their shared quarters, a small, meek smile appearing on his features.
âIâm so sorry. I completely forgot about your birthday. I was so focused on my work, it justâŚslipped my mind. But, I did get you a gift. Here, take it. If you canât forgive meâŚI understand.â He held out the box for him, bowing his head.
When Chrom was younger and Emmeryn was still alive, birthdayâs were always a grand celebration. She had always made sure that it was a special day and Chrom would never forget how loved and cherished he felt during that time. The first time his birthday came around after she had passed, he almost wished no one had recognized it. Nothing felt the same and instead of being a day of joy, it was just one of regret for him. He was constantly reminded of the fact that he was alive and his sister was dead because he hadnât been able to save her. His only saving grace that first year was Robin. He had always been able to find solace in his partner, even before they had gotten together, but he had managed to make that first birthday without his sister special, without doing much.
It wasnât an expectation that he had that Robin needed to acknowledge his birthday. He knew that the other didnât like talking about the subject of birthdayâs in general, but he couldnât help but be excited when his birthday rolled around. He was hoping to spend the day with the man he loved, just enjoying one anotherâs company and maybe having a special dinner for the two of them. He never was one for material items and much more preferred to spend time with the people he loved above anything else. However, when the sun was beginning to set and Robin hadnât said anything, let alone even come out of the library that day, he felt his heart being to sink a little.
He tried not to be upset, he knew that the other was busy, they all were, but it hurt a little knowing that his partner had forgotten his birthday. He was never one to hide how he was feeling, but that night, he didnât feel like bringing it up. He didnât want Robin to feel bad about missing it, especially since it really wasnât all that important of a day to begin with. It wasnât like he was small anymore and there were lavish parties thrown where his parents friends would come over and dancing and laughter could be heard all throughout the night.Â
Even though a few days had passed since his birthday, he still hadnât been able to truly shake that hurt feeling. He had been hoping that Robin hadnât been able to pick up on it, because he truly didnât want to make the other feel bad over it. He knew he was awful at trying to hide his feelings, but he had been trying his best to act like he normally did around him. He had been lost in thought when Robin entered their room and slowly turned around to look over at him when he called his name. He blinked a few times, processing what he was saying before gently taking the present from him.
He smiled up at him, but the smile didnât quite reach his eyes before he shook his head lightly. âThank you, Robin. You didnât need to get me anything for my birthday.â He meant that earnestly and didnât expect his partner to get him anything. He would have been content simply having some time alone with him, that was a good enough present for him. âI know youâve been busy. I forgive you. You donât have to worry about it. You know that itâs hard for me to be upset with you over anything to begin with.â Even though everything he said was true, he was still trying to mask the fact that it truly had hurt knowing his partner forgot about his birthday.
He looked down at the gift and slowly started to unwrap it. He couldnât help but to smile lightly when he saw that it was a new silver fasten to hold up his cape. There was a book on the one side and a sword on the other, a physical representation of the two of them. He couldnât help but smile, a genuine one, before looking up at Robin. âI love it. Thank you.â
