I want you to know this was basically me as I was writing about the team expansions in the NHL.
Title: Hockey is for Lovers

The profitability of the NHL had actually made the World Hockey League (WHL) a possibility. It had been made to be a rival to the NHL, poaching players to be on their teams. It had been pretty nasty for a few years, but it had started in the late 1960s and was already being absorbed into the NHL. “At least I’m getting a few Canadian teams out of this arrangement. Don’t you think it’s crazy that I started this League but only have a handful of teams?” He asked before finishing his coffee and going to the percolator to pour more. “I have a bigger population, that’s all.” “You take all the Canadian players for your teams. They’d do just as good in Canada.” An old fight at this point. It was half hearted. There was no malice. Hell, they were starting to talk about bringing in some players from around the world in more numbers than they already did. Of course, some of that would come in time, but Mattie had his eyes on some Soviet born players that he’d love to see in the League. “Do better at the draft and maybe then you’ll get more of your star players. I heard this Gretzky guy is good. A prodigy. And he’s playing for the Oilers.” Alfred commented and Mattie nodded along. Wayne Gretzky was a high school hockey prodigy. Mattie was happy he’d been recruited onto a new Canadian team. Keep the Canadians in Canada and all that. “This is true. Maybe I’ll get some kick ass teams this season. Other than the Canadiens. They’re great, but my heart is with the Leafs in all honesty.” Which was true. Mattie went to every Leafs game the way Alfred went to every Bruins game. They each had their favorite team, even if Alfred now had the Capitals, the Bruins would continue to hold his heart.
this is so self-indulgent but i love imagining a dysfunctional friendship between alfred and ludwig. like they are friends, truly - if only alfred stops asking how gil is, is gil still single, does gil still remember him, 'can you fix me up with your brother?' and lud already can't handle alfred and his unorthodox work ethics and conference mannerisms, he is one bad day away from wringing alfred's neck. meanwhile, alfred thinks that he and lud are so much alike, that they pine for the same people, and those people are essentially motherly brother figures who they want to possess and at the same time stay away from. And that he thinks luds silence is an invitation to just talk more about his feelings.
need Al and Lud beefing and physically squaring up over who gets to suck Gil's tits tbh (boys, behave! there's two for a reason!)
