I remember when I read about last year's I.C.E. raid against the Korean factory workers, one of the photos of the workers lined up against a wall had a caption that didn't sit right with me- it said they were "waiting to be shackled".

And I thought, "gee, those I.C.E. agents sure do love their handcuffs, don't they? Just like Israeli soldiers do!" Because, you see, up until the Israeli military's invasion of Palestine, and the I.C.E. raids here in the US, I didn't realize that it was okay to put handcuffs on someone who hadn't committed a crime. I thought handcuffs were only for criminals, but I guess they're actually for anybody that law enforcement doesn't like, crime or no crime.

I've never liked shackles. Ever since I was a little girl, they've always rubbed me the wrong way. I can't help but wonder if my childhood hatred of shackles might have started with these three.

I didn't watch Sailor Moon too much as a kid in the late nineties, because unlike other cartoons that were on at the time, each episode was part of one long continuous story that I didn't have the attention span to follow back then. Moreover, the show had already been on for years by that point, and was on season 4, which was when these three goobers showed up, started shackling people to boards that popped up out of nowhere and made mirrors appear out of their victims' chests.

In hindsight, I know the mirrors were a way to represent something non-physical (dreams) as a physical object, but five-year-old me didn't understand visual metaphors, and was just baffled as to why all these random people had mirrors coming out of their chests. I hadn't learned about internal organs in school yet, but I did know for a fact that people aren't supposed to have mirrors in their chests.

Equally baffling to me was how they always screamed whenever the bad guys put their heads in the mirrors. It didn't look painful to me, but the victims sure acted like they were in pain. Like, the dude's not even touching you and you're screaming like a horror movie victim.
