Dream Of The Private Eye Series, cyanotype on graph paper. • Cyanotype (sa-YAN-no-type) is a photographic printing process invented in 1842 by Sir John Herschel—three years after the birth of photography. Its telltale characteristic is the heavenly blue color—a result of a chemical reaction when cyanotype is exposed to ultraviolet light. The process involves brushing the photo-sensitive emulsion onto paper (or surface of choice) and letting it dry in a dark place. The emulsion is a mixture of two chemicals, ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide, dissolved in distilled water. I wish I could tell you that these were relatives of mine having a whooping good time at a county fair. Instead it is an awesome found-photograph that I enlarged and made an image-transfer onto watercolor paper. I used repurposed wax paper from address labels as a base for the “lift” from an ink-jet printer. Apparently today is #worldcyanotypeday. Who knew? Here is my entry. A distressed cyanotype from my “Private I Series” (Private I Series, 1992-1994) In this series I staged fictional photographs as evidence of a fictional crime investigation and investigation into my shadow-self. (Carl Jung etc) Sounds heavy, but it was amazing shooting one of my best friends as the muse and to get out of myself in order to get into myself.
