Personally, I think reputation is one of the most AceLu coded albums like ohmygod. When I shuffled my playlist and Don't Blame Me came up, I almost screamed. Anyway.
Don't Blame Me is Ace, with a little bit of Luffy.
I've been breakin' hearts a long time, and
Toyin' with them older guys
Just playthings for me to use
It's my opinion that Ace is not shy about sex and has had multiple lovers and casual flings on his adventures. This lyric alludes to that possibility.
For you, I would cross the line
I would waste my time
I would lose my mind
They say, "She's gone too far this time"
Ace would do literally anything for Luffy. Theoretically, the reason he got baited into the fight with Blackbeard is because BB casually mentioned killing Luffy. There's a quote (I think from the manga?) I think of sometimes when Dadan asks Ace why he didn't run from a fight, and Ace gives his explanation, ending on, "...this time, Luffy was behind me," insinuating the reason he had stood his ground was to protect Luffy. Don't question what he would do for his boy.
These lines are also very Luffy. His entire rampage through Impel Down and Marineford is basically just this.
And baby, for you, I (I) would (would) fall from grace
Just (just) to (to) touch your face
If (if) you (you) walk away
I'd beg you on my knees to stay
These lines flow in the same vein as the previous ones. (Also, "on my knees" just kinda hurts when thinking about Ace.) Also, the repeated sounds (I (I) would (would), Just (just) to (to), If (if) you (you)) gives heartbeat and that's very AceLu to me, sorry.
Don't blame me, love made me crazy
If it doesn't, you ain't doin' it right
Lord, save me, my drug is my baby
I'll be usin' for the rest of my life
These lines honestly represent both of our boys. The absolute push-and-pull whirlwind of their relationship is conveyed perfectly.
I'm insane, but I'm your baby (your baby)
Echoes (echoes) of your name inside my mind
Halo, hiding my obsession
I once was poison ivy, but now I'm your daisy
Okay, jesus, these lines.
Ace definitely sees himself as "insane," most likely. How could our boy go through what he did and not consider himself to be going mad in some capacity? (Relatable.)
Let's not forget how obsessed our boy is with his. Carrying around Luffy's wanted poster? Collecting them every time he sees one? The way he'll go on an hour-long rant about how great Luffy is? He wants to seem so cool and collected about the whole thing (halo, hiding my obsession) but the boy is Down Bad, like c'mon.
I once was poison ivy, but now I'm your daisy
Poison ivy may be beautiful, but it's dangerous, hurting any who try to touch it. The "poison ivy" doesn't feel worthy of love, that they are only destined to hurt people they dare to love and forever push people away. However, they have gone through a transformation. Knowing this person, loving this person, has changed them fundamentally. Daisies may be plain, but they are still more desirable than poison ivy. They represent innocence, purity, and new beginnings.
I feel like I don't have to explain myself on that one, iykyk.
In conclusion, AceLu was written by Taylor Swift. Thank you so much for coming to my TedTalk. Please check back in tomorrow for day two.
