Macross is actually so important to me. It was my first identifiable instance where I paid attention to the robots. I had initially started to explore the mecha genre as a general scifi fan. I had already watched GitS, Evangelion, Code Geass, 0079, some Gundam OVAs and even Gurren Lagann, but I was certainly one of those caricatures of an anime watcher that would say they care about everything else than the mechs. Something happened with Macross. It wasn't even DYRL. It was the TV show. A switch flipped in my brain and I saw things differently. Also what's up with every other anime in the music genre having a mediocre at best soundtrack unless it's Macross. Good old reliable Macross.
