He bumps his shoulder lightly against Allen’s.

"What, getting cold feet?" Allen exhales through his nose. "No." He’s not getting cold feet. Not exactly. He just doesn’t understand how the hell they ended up here. Oh, wait. Right, they're here… … because waiting isn't an option.

"What?" he asks defensively. "It's not poisoned." The uncertainty in his voice is so genuine that Allen cannot help the soft smile tugging at his lips. He takes another spoonful. This time without hesitation. "That's not it, dummy. It's… good," he admits. "Looks awful, but it actually tastes good." The reaction is immediate. Sixty's entire face brightens almost instantly. "Really? I mean, of course it does." An adorable blue flush spreads across his cheeks, and he quickly clears his throat, suddenly flustered. "I… practiced a little." Allen pauses mid bite and looks up at him. The faint blue across Sixty's cheeks only deepens under the attention. For someone who spends most of his time acting smug and impossible to intimidate, the sight is unexpectedly endearing.

It happens in less than a second. The instinct to protect himself comes first. Familiar. Automatic. It lives in every part of him, woven into reflex and motion. His body slips easily into patterns it has practiced a thousand times before, knowing the mechanics by heart. How to fall, how to brace, how to soften the impact. How to survive. For one heartbeat, that instinct is all there is. Sharp. Urgent. Fucking immediate. But it never gets the chance to settle into place, passing through him like a fleeting shadow. Instead, it is overwritten in an instant by something else rising inside him, sudden and absolute, sweeping everything else aside with startling clarity. Something older. Hardwired. Buried so deep he has never felt it this clearly before. It comes from somewhere beyond thought, beyond reason, from a place he cannot reach or name. Older than fear. Stronger than pain. More certain than anything else. Without doubt. Without hesitation. Only a single, overwhelming need. To protect the growing life inside him. No matter what. The moment his footing slips and a burst of pain explodes through his back, the choice has already been made. Not consciously. Not deliberately. It just happens.
