only my two cents...
Partnership, Not Martyrdom
(source images : instagram/alan__rickman__) I just saw a post on a Harry Potter Facebook page praising Alan Rickman for âchoosing love over his own wishâ because his wife Rima Horton didnât want children.
And honestly?
This constant need to turn him into a tragic, self-sacrificing hero is exhausting!
Somehow, in these narratives, he âsuffers silently,â âgives up fatherhood,â âlives loyalty like Snapeâ â and she quietly becomes the woman who denied him something essential. Not explicitly villainized. Just⌠positioned as the obstacle.
Itâs subtle. Itâs polished. Itâs still unfair.
We donât know what they discussed. We don't know whether it was a mutual choice. We donât know if he even framed it as a sacrifice.
But people love the martyr storyline because it mirrors Severus Snape. Eternal longing. Silent pain. Devotion without reward.
Except this wasnât Harry Potter. It was a real relationship between two adults.
If fatherhood had been a non-negotiable dream for him, he could have left. Many couples â in Hollywood and outside of it â have ended relationships over that exact issue. He stayed for over forty years.
Thatâs not helpless sacrifice. Thatâs choice.
And reducing a decades-long partnership to âhe gave up his dream for herâ feels less like honoring him⌠and more like subtly blaming her.
They were surrounded by friends, by extended family, by other peopleâs children. A life without biological children doesnât mean a life without young people in it. And caring deeply about education and social issues doesnât contradict choosing not to become a parent.
Maybe we should stop projecting fictional tragedy onto real women â especially when that âtragedyâ is largely imagined. And maybe my two cents are simple: admiration shouldnât come at the cost of fairness.

Albert SquareÂ

Thereâs a famous old story about Prince Albert that says he didnât want a fuss made after his death. âDonât build me a statue, for chrissakes,â he said (Iâm paraphrasing). âI donât want anything grand.â So what did Queen Victoria do? She built him the grandest statue in the capital!
