Alan Freed (Disc Jockey, 1922-1965)
"Freed, the DJ who gave rock 'n' roll its name, fronted Moondog's Rock'n'Roll Party at Cleveland's WJW radio station, where he programmed mainly black R&B plus some early white rock 'n' roll records. His vocal jive delighted his audience, and he also appeared in several early rock 'n' roll exploitation movies, including Rock Around The Clock, Rock, Rock, Rock (both 1956) and others. He accepted a songwriting credit on Chuck Berry's 'Maybellene' in exchange for helping to make it a hit, and was accused of payola, after which he died an alcoholic accused of income tax evasion." - Michael Heatley, The Definitive Illustrated Encyclopedia of Rock (2006)

REVISITING JOHNNY RIVERS
Recently Elmore Magazine sat down with Johnny Rivers (born Ramistella) and an incredible journey of a talented musician unfolded. As a teen, he received a record deal, a new name from the DJ who coined the term "rock and roll," and royalties for a song he gave to one of the nation's hottest acts of that time. After moving to California several years later, he meets a certain entrepreneur, and the two open up Los Angele's iconic Whiskey Au Go Go. Modeled after the European disco, The Whisky becomes the hottest scene in L.A. during the 60's and soon America is on fire. Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones could be seen at the nightclub whenever they hit the West Coast. Johnny Rivers' story drips a nostalgic wonder, making this 25 year old yearn even moreso for the primitive party of the 60's. Stay tuned for this and more in the Nov/Dec issue of Elmore.
Give me a time machine. Today in 1952, the FIRST rock 'n' roll concert was performed in Cleveland, known as The Moondog Coronation Ball. Most noted for the intergration of rock music, the event also broke barriers of segregation during a place and time when radio stations and record labels still divided the two. Performances included the Dominoes, Tiny Grimes (see video) and Paul Williams. I'd kill to be part of that scene.
About 10,000 people over the capacity caused the fire department to shut the event down. Counterfeiting in 1952, who woulda thought? Now those RFID chips in the wristbands at major festivals like Lollapalooza and Coachella don't seem so ridiculous after all.
Organized by disc-jockey Alan Freed who also coined the term "rock 'n' roll" (a euphemism for sex) the Moondog Coronation Ball changed the face of music, and more importantly, broke social barriers.
Forever and ever and ever, I will rock and always roll.
