Opinions from an insider.
I love freelance writing, I really do. And being able to work for Hanabi Media and several others has helped me learn so much. But after launching several titles with them, I keep running into the same road blocks.
âYour main character is too mean.â âThey canât be sarcastic.â âThey need to be sweeter.â âThe main character reacts too strongly.â âMake her run from the room crying.â
âYour side story is too serious.â âYou need to be lighter. Happier.â âPut in jealous rivalry!â
âYour words are too big.â âUse smaller sentences.â âOur readers are teens, you have to make it very simple.â âStop having long words.â
Itâs.... frustrating to be honest. And whatâs even more frustrating is when one of their editors (a non-native English speaker) think they know better than me (an almost-native English speaker) and edits my work to include broken English. Iâm not kidding, I once wrote out a pretty alliteration describing someone, and they changed it to âfatty and naughty.â Iâm serious, âfatty and naughtyâ.
Now this wasnât meant to be a diss track for my past jobs. I love them, and appreciate the opportunities they gave me. But now that Iâve tasted freedom to write full characters, and deeper plotlines with Love Mythos: Sanctuary Island, I can never go back to bland MCs with confined gender rolls, and love interests with only one body type. Â
I hope you guys come on this journey with me, especially those of you who loved the other titles I wrote. I promise you, youâre in for one heck of a ride with a lot more choices.
