Opinions from an insider.
I love freelance writing, I really do. And being able to work for Hanabi Media and several others has helped me learn so much. But after launching several titles with them, I keep running into the same road blocks.
“Your main character is too mean.” “They can’t be sarcastic.” “They need to be sweeter.” “The main character reacts too strongly.” “Make her run from the room crying.”
“Your side story is too serious.” “You need to be lighter. Happier.” “Put in jealous rivalry!”
“Your words are too big.” “Use smaller sentences.” “Our readers are teens, you have to make it very simple.” “Stop having long words.”
It’s.... frustrating to be honest. And what’s even more frustrating is when one of their editors (a non-native English speaker) think they know better than me (an almost-native English speaker) and edits my work to include broken English. I’m not kidding, I once wrote out a pretty alliteration describing someone, and they changed it to “fatty and naughty.” I’m serious, “fatty and naughty”.
Now this wasn’t meant to be a diss track for my past jobs. I love them, and appreciate the opportunities they gave me. But now that I’ve tasted freedom to write full characters, and deeper plotlines with Love Mythos: Sanctuary Island, I can never go back to bland MCs with confined gender rolls, and love interests with only one body type. I hope you guys come on this journey with me, especially those of you who loved the other titles I wrote. I promise you, you’re in for one heck of a ride with a lot more choices.
