• Rita was born to a family that weren’t really that important. They are half blood, and weren’t really that important socially. Rita is the youngest of four siblings, and she’s the only girl. Her parents weren’t too focused on her, but she got by. • At Hogwarts Rita was sorted into Slytherin. She wasn’t really sure why, knowing that she was a half blood, and not really thinking she fitted in that much. But she kind of liked the benefits that she got. Rita learnt to be selfish, and she learnt to be manipulative. Soon, it didn’t matter that she wasn’t really a pureblood, because her attitude made up for what her blood lacked. • Whilst her family wasn’t that important socially, Rita tried to make up for that. Rita didn’t exactly care who she climbed over to get to the top. She just did it. She was determined person, and wanted better than what her parents could give her. They were pretty focused upon her brothers, so she was really given a free reign to do what she wanted. • Throughout school Rita didn’t really know what she wanted to do. None of the wizarding careers really caught her attention. It wasn’t till sixth year that she realised that her writing hobby could potentially become more. The blonde started reading the Daily Prophet cover to cover. Not for the news, she couldn’t care less about that. She rather wanted to learn all she could able journalism. • Upon graduating Hogwarts, with okay grades, she began an internship at the Daily Prophet. She was a low level journalist. But she loved it. Her writing was well received, and she was finally doing something she loved. • Then the war began. Rita was careful, and she didn’t pick a side. She didn’t want to be on the losing side, so was careful, and didn’t show allegiance to either side. She had to be careful with what she wrote, not wanting to risk getting hurt. It worked well, for she exited the war well. • Over the past five years she had really grown the ranks in the Daily Prophet, and Rita is currently working as a senior journalist. She’s free to write what she wants, and she loves it. • Her work has got her in a few sticky situations though, and her illegal animagus form isn’t helping. • It has though, allowed her to gain some valuable information about the death eaters. Although she isn’t sure what to do with it. She knows Voldemort’s return is inevitable…. But she just doesn’t know what side to join this time. But she knows this time she will have to make that choice.

Choosing a side – SOOO. First war she didn’t pick a side. But this time she really will have to pick one side or the other. So I think this will be really cool to explore, and see which side she will go too. She wants to be on the winning side, so will try to hold out till she can tell? But it would be cool to explore her maybe being forced to pick before she can work out who will win

Journalism/Daily Prophet – Rita loves a good gossip, so would be cool to get some drama maybe from something she wrote?

Knowledge of the prophecy – Rita overheard the prophecy, so it would be really interesting to see how she might react and do with the info. This might be key to her choosing a side, with her considering who might benefit from the info the most?

Friendships – So in her skeleton she’s linked to Amelia, but would be great to explore some friendships. Rita was a half blood slytherin so would be cool to explore her relationships with the other slytherins. She learnt to be manipulative and bitchy at school, so might be cool if one of her class mates was her mentor or similar?

Romance – Rita is bisexual, though she would never admit that. She would not be against a political marriage, especially to a pureblood, and she would really see it as a way of cementing her status. She’s attracted to both men and woman, and finds both exciting, and definitely enjoys sleeping around. But she definitely hold secrets/gossip about people’s heads, especially women, as she doesn’t want anyone to find out how promiscuous she actually is.

Headcanon – Rita’s never been in a serious relationship. She was more interested in her work. Of course, she wants to be loved, but until now, it hasn’t been too important to her. Now, she kind of sees it more as an investment in finding a solid social place for herself.

Suwon quickly swipes the phone from Siwon, immediately prompting a squawking litany on the importance of abiding by seniority customs. Juwon can be seen massaging his temples in the background. “You sound just like an old man — just like these ugly geezers!”

Another squawk, probably from Siwon. Sowon shakes her head. “You better be glad I’m not there, then. Otherwise you’d be stuck with three geezers.”

There’s a beat of silence before he speaks again. “Maybe, but I’d rather have you here than not at all.”

She stifles the sudden urge to sob. “Yeah?”

In the dark of her room, through the glint of the screen, she sees three pairs of hopeful eyes. “Mm-hmm.”

She starts, almost tripping over her own bra, but she manages. In every sense of the word. She doesn’t turn back.

“Yeah, I — I got a lot of work. To do. Need to study,” her words come out too fast for her liking. Too jumbled. It shouldn’t be — she shouldn’t be.

The mattress creaks as he rises from the nest of soiled sheets, eyes boring holes in the dip of her back. Her skin crawls. “Need any help with that…?”

(She might but she didn’t want him any closer.)

Sowon shakes her head — quickly, like she was expecting him to ask.

“I think y—”

“No!” She jumps. Finally faces him, this time. He’s still on the bed and he’s still smirking. As always. Somehow, she meets his gaze. “No, I — it’s fine. I’m fine. You can just,” she motions to the bed, arms outstretched, the rest of her dress pooling around her waist.

His eyes are searching hers, too hopeful to be nothing, but at least he stops moving.

“Noona, you should—”

“Should really get going,” she cuts him off, regaining some semblance of composure. Still good. “I should really get going.”

“You know you could just stay here.”

Sowon frowns. She somehow regrets giving him that.

She wants a husband with money and looks and brains and power, but not so much of any one that it would outshine her; she craves to be in the power seat of a power couple, and to get the attention she feels she’s always been unjustly robbed of. She’s got no interest whatsoever in romance and finds the whole concept a laughable waste of time. But for all she projects to the world, Dolores in reality harbors a deep, deep, DEEPDEEPDEEP same-sex attraction. She has thoroughly locked herself in that closet and a Norwegian Ridgeback swallowed the key.

patronus —Persian cat. This animal has all the appearance of being sweet and cuddly, but rub her the wrong way and those barely-retracted claws are coming out in an instant. Vain, independent, calculating, haughty, and very, very well-groomed at all times.

boggart —Stemming from her Napoleon Complex, Dolores’ boggart takes the form of herself shrunken down like Alice in Wonderland after sipping the drink me potion; her voice squeaks higher and higher into an undetectable range no matter how loud she yells and she can just barely avoid getting squashed beneath someone else’s disgusting, dirty shoes. Dolores as a person demands attention to function and she simply will not tolerate being made to feel literally small.

personality traits —

tidy - Dolores is obsessed with beauty and perfection and symmetry in all things and nothing makes her skin crawl more than disorder—to the extent that after her mother and father split and she lived full-time with her father, Dolores developed OCD (though it hasn’t been properly diagnosed as such, and Dolores would immediately write off anyone who attempted to call it that to her face). In her mind she is simply particular; she has very high standards and she expects the world to rise to them, or else she’ll root out the filth around her weed by weed. She cut off the heads of her stuffies who stepped out of line at her toddler-age tea parties you’d better believe she’d do the same to you and care less about it.

passive aggressive - Dolores is well-known for her disconcerting calm in face of disagreements, her calculated cute-sweet demeanor and high-pitched voice. But make no mistake; Dolores is sugar laced with arsenic. In all likelihood she hates your guts and has already cooked up an in-depth five-year plan to chip away at you piece by painstaking piece. It’s a mystery how she manages to keep all that highly-pressurized rage simmering beneath the surface the way she’s somehow perfected, because she’s wound up so tight that it’s a wonder her eyes don’t pop out of her damn head and she’s about twenty-five seconds away from a full-blown psychotic break on a good day.

jealous - Dolores wants what she feels she’s due, plain and simple. When she sees others gain the things she wants while she gets overlooked, it stokes that ever-burning vindictive flame inside of her. It started in early childhood when her father gave attention to anyone or anything that wasn’t her, and it’s only gotten worse every day since.

intolerant - At this point in her life, her infamous intolerance is still in its earliest seed stages, but the seed is planted. One of the most interesting things for me about writing a character like Dolores at this age is to see how and why this mentality grows out of experiences she encounters in these formative years.

character biography —

Born ten pounds of spunk in a four pound, five ounce package, Dolores Jane Umbridge came into this world pink and perfect.

Perfect. Perfect. Perfectperfectperfect.

Even from a young age it was all Dolores cared about. Her father Orford Umbridge would whisper to Dolores what a beautiful perfect princess she was and Dolores believed it with every fibre of her being. Beautiful. Perfect. Perfect. Perfect.

Then her mother Ellen gave birth to a younger brother who showed not the faintest trace of magic, and that was not perfect. The rift between parents and siblings grew into a cavern as Orford’s whispering words turned against Ellen; her fault. Worthless. Vile. Mudblood. Filthy Squib. Repulsive. Disgraceful. Wrong.

It wasn’t long before the couple split up, with Ellen and her son being banished to the Muggle world, and then it was just Orford and Dolores, together in their once-more perfect world.

And would that it could have stayed that way forever. Orford had always had wandering eyes and Dolores, desperate always to be the only girl in her father’s life, grew jealous and suspicious and hateful (and nonononono NOT anything else nope) for the beautiful vapid creatures that drew his gaze, threatening to upend what was hers.

Knowing nothing beyond her childhood of constant praise and adoration, Dolores went to Hogwarts expecting the world to cater to her every whim. So when people didn’t immediately kiss the ground she walked on, it made her angry. When all the girls and boys didn’t fall all over themselves to try and woo her, it made her furious. When the professors and adults didn’t sing her vast praises on high, it made her outraged.

How was everyone on earth too fucking useless to see how perfect she was?!

Dolores was a bundle of dynamite wrapped up in a pretty pink bow, just waiting to blow.

She went to the Ministry with adjusted expectations on being outright offered what she knew she deserved, and was proven right when she was overlooked by grotesquely unqualified superiors in favor of the sniveling ingrates all around her. But Dolores was prepared to play the long game and bide her time, just waiting for that one weak crack in the system where she could dig in her knuckle and crumble an empire with a smile on her face.

And she thought she’d found that perfect crack when she went to the Dark Lord. Surely he would see Dolores for all she was worth, surely he would bestow upon her all that power, finally, finally, finally. He was only a silly man, after all.

But the foul, imperfect world let Dolores down again. The Dark Lord gave his preference to some other detestable twots just like Dolores always feared Orford would, and then he paid the price for his idiocy when he fell from power (serves him right the arrogant swine), and Dolores returned to her long game at the Ministry with a newfound fervor to crush all who dared try to overlook her beneath her pink kitten heels.

Waiting for the next perfect move to present itself. And when it does, she’ll be ready.

plot ideas —

Girlsgirlsgirls. I would love an opportunity to unpack some of Dolores’ deeply rooted internalized homophobia. Maybe it’s an openly gay and proud woman who drives Dolores up the wall, maybe it’s a beautiful lady who despite all of Dolores’ efforts starts to get beneath her skin, someone she can’t seem to shake… This could go in so many directions and I’m here for them all!

Ministry Spats. Anyone she might have dustups with on her Ministry stomping grounds—Arthur Weasley, Alastor Moody, etc. Also anyone with pro-creature leanings and/or sentiments at this stage could greatly inform her later mindset and I would love to have them interact.

boggart — the last time she actually faced a boggart, it was a clown, but if lily were to come across one now, it would take the form of a riptide. lily is obviously afraid of many things (especially now that she’s a mother, fear is a constant to her), but the feeling that is the worst in the world to her is the feeling of being pulled down, drowning, unable to escape. sometimes her grief over James’ injury is like this — all-consuming, frightening, dark, as if it’ll never pass and she’ll never be free of it. for lily, the worst thing would be to fight and fight to escape the darkness and for it not to make a difference.

+ nurturing — lily has always believed and seen the best in those around her, and she has a way of bringing that side out of people. even when she was a girl and friends with severus, her friendship brought out a side of him that the rest of the world never got to see. she’s not maternal in a bossy or overbearing way, but in a way that gently cultivates good in the people that she spends her time on.

+ intuitive — lily has a gift for being able to read people. she can often understand what they don’t say just as well as what they do. this has been a great asset especially in her dealings with sirius and remus. her understanding cuts to the heart of the matter, which makes it easier for her to be able to be there for the people she loves.

- self-righteous — sometimes it’s difficult for lily to see where she’s in the wrong. once she’s made her mind up that she’s right, it’s nearly impossible to sway her to see the other side of things, even in the situations where she is wrong.

- stubborn — lily doesn’t give up easily. when she sets her mind to something, she digs her heels in, even when that wreaks havoc in her life. she’s too stubborn to give up hope of healing james, even when healer after healer tells her it’s hopeless. she’s too stubborn to forgive severus for the ways he hurt her, even though he’s more than proved his loyalty at his own personal risk. she’s too stubborn to give up on finding a way to make remus and sirius reconcile, even though both of them would far prefer for her to get off their backs about it.

character biography —

lily would be the first to admit that she had an idyllic childhood. her family was solidly middle class, ensconced in english suburbia (though right on the edge of the nice side of town). she had an older sister that she idolized, two parents that were deeply in love and doted on both of their daughters, and a charming personality that attracted friends at her schools and in the neighborhood from an early age. the only thing abnormal about lily was the strange things that she could seem to do, even from a young age. it alarmed her parents, but they did a good job of hiding that from her, so lily was never concerned about being strange, only fascinated by the things she could make happen.

it wasn’t until she was nine and a shabby boy from the wrong side of town approached her at the park that she knew the truth — she was a witch. knowing severus was like tasting chocolate for the first time — sweet, intoxicating, a touch of bitter consequence. she lapped up everything he could tell her, dragged him home to meet her parents, insisted that he become a part of the family. her parents were hesitant at first, but ready to latch onto any explanation that someone could give them as to what strange things their daughter could do, and it was only two years later when a tall blonde witch appeared at the doorway to confirm the story.

looking back, lily can see now that the cracks in her family began the moment severus approached. the more lily dragged severus into her family’s life, the more petunia edged her way out of lily’s. by the time lily left for hogwarts, the damage was already done, but she was too young and excited to realize that she had lost her sister.

lily’s life at hogwarts was a dream. she was a witch, and she was good at it, too. gryffindor fit like a glove, and she gathered friends around her that latched onto her light, her joy, her radiance. she kept severus close, too, but it was harder with him in slytherin, and his housemates looking down on their friendship.

there were only two parts of hogwarts that lily found difficult — the fact that severus was wrong because it did matter, and James Potter.

being a muggleborn would never be something that lily could be ashamed of, but people still tried to knock her down because of it. if she had known that trading the muggle world to be a wtich would plunge her into the heart of a war, maybe lily wouldn’t have been so enthusiastic about going to hogwarts, but by the time she realized the state of her new world, she was in too deep to do anything but fight.

James Potter was arrogant and bossy and rude and mean. he was spiteful and prejudiced and not as good looking as he thought he was. if lily was the hero of her story, james was the antagonist, and for five and a half years, lily was deeply committed to the grudge she held over the boy in question. but in her sixth year, she no longer had severus, and james no longer seemed to enjoy picking on the weaker students he had tortured for years. it was easier for everyone if they learned how to get along, lily told herself, and it was true. the common room was certainly much calmer in the evenings without evans and potter screaming at each other over the latest prank or obnoxious way to ask her out.

even now, lily couldn’t say when hatred turned to apathy and apathy turned to interest and interest to friendship and friendship to love. maybe it was the fact that remus was always there to share the latest thoughtful thing james had done for him, maybe it was the way james consoled the homesick first year when they found her lost in the castle during rounds as head boy and girl, or maybe it was just that lily evans and james potter were perfectly matched for each other. of course, it’s never that simple, but the fact of the matter is that lily and james’ love story was so complex that there was no way for her to describe how hatred and enmity turned to love and eventually marriage.

but it did, and james became her best friend. and when her parents died in a car accident and petunia said she never wanted to see lily again, james became her family. he was the reason she was able to fight even when the fight seemed hopeless. he was the reason she hoped and longed for a better life. he was the reason she let mary doll her up in a white dress and heels that were way too tall for her and walked down the aisle to that cliche waltz. he was the reason she wasn’t afraid to give birth to harry in the midst of war. he was the reason she was still able to smile and laugh while living every moment in fear that their hiding place would be discovered and their son would be murdered.

he wasn’t her reason for living, because lily evans wasn’t a helpless, brainless girl, but he was the reason that her life was so full of light in the middle of a war.

until, one day, that light went out.

these last five years, lily has done everything she could to get that light back, to see james open his eyes and give her that look that makes her heart melt. she’s enrolled him in treatment after treatment, tried every new trial that the healing community comes up with, read every medical journal she could get her hands on from every wizarding healing institution around the world. she trained to become a healer so that she could do her own research. she left harry with sirius for days and sometimes weeks at a time, only coming home to kiss her son and catch some rest, all with the goal in mind of reuniting her family.

but somewhere along the way, harry grew from a baby who knew nothing of war to a little boy who could feel the absence of his mum and had the words to question why. before she could realize what was happening, he was turning to sirius more often than he was turning to her, asking her questions that she didn’t have answers for, showcasing new abilities that she hadn’t the time to teach him. where had he learned to play piano? was that french he was just speaking?

lily is caught between wanting to be a good mother and wanting to reunite her family, and she’s only beginning to see that the two goals aren’t necessarily compatible.

plot ideas —

mmm so MANY

— harry // lily is right on the verge of beginning to realize that her obsession with getting james back is hurting her son. she’s not around as much as he wants her to be, and he’s smart enough to see that his mum is unhappy. he has no interest in his father, sees uncle sirius as the only dad he needs, and that concerns lily. I’d love to see things push this even father home for her. I think it’ll be really important for lily to come to terms with the fact that she might have to move on in order to give her son the life he deserves.

— sirius // wow, lily and sirius have gotten themselves into a little bit of a mess. they relied on one another so much after james was injured and it only seemed natural at the time that sirius should move in with lily and harry. but it’s been five years now, and their living situation has harry confused. in fact, their whole relationship is probably confused. sirius and lily have no romantic feelings whatsoever for each other, but that doesn’t mean that sirius would be okay with some other man swooping in and stealing lily’s heart. if lily does decide to move on, how can she do that while she shares a house with james’ best friend and brother?

— horcrux hunt // of course, there’s that dynamic in her relationship with sirius, too. lily doesn’t know about the horcruxes. all she knows is that sirius is helping dumbledore with a lengthy project — she suspects it has something to do with the order, but she doesn’t quite understand why. voldemort’s gone, isn’t he? if lily were to find out about them, and discover that both sirius and dumbledore kept such an important secret from her (that they knew the man who might target her son would return in only a matter of time), how would she react? how would she be able to trust them again?

— old friend // man, I’d love to see some lily/severus stuff in this verse. has she forgiven her old friend? does she know about his role in the war? does she know that he was a spy for the order? does she even know that he was a death eater? what would happen if something were to bring them back into one another’s lives and they rekindled their friendship? if that information came out later, would she ever be able to forgive him? and how could she hope to have a good relationship with severus when she lives in the same house as sirius?

— death eaters rising // lily has no reason to think that voldemort could ever come back — no one but sirius, dumbledore, kingsley, minerva, and alastor have any reason to think that, because no one else knows about the horcruxes (well, except for a very small faction of death eaters, but they’re not about to spread that around). so if the death eaters were to begin to move around again, what will her response be? will she be able to read the signs and put two and two together, or will she just think they’re stirring trouble because they can?

— voldemort’s return // mmm, if voldie does return, what will that mean for lily potter? her son was one of the boys he considered going after. what if he decides to target harry again, this time for real? how would she protect her son?

boggart — what an outsider might perceive to be a fear of loss is in fact intrinsically linked to a fear of failure; poppy’s boggart is indeed death, but specifically preventable death. in other words, she will see those she cares about in mortal peril, but she is powerless to save them.

+intelligent - she might not be minerva mcgonagall in the duelling department, but poppy excelled in all core subjects at school (as well as astronomy and muggle studies) in order to train as a healer. she is often found reading medical journals of the muggle and magical kind in her spare time — and if you call her ‘nurse’, when she is quite aware that a healer is the muggle equivalent of a doctor, she is very likely to show you her extensive knowledge of gruesome hexes.

+perfectionist - though there’s a valid argument for obsessive compulsive tendencies, poppy believes she’s merely a perfectionist. it’s not often problematic, though her excessive tidying and cleaning can become a tad time-consuming for her, and in fact ensures the best possible care for her patients.

+-protective - linked to a desire for regular company, which she sometimes lacks in the hospital wing, poppy is protective of her patients to the point of trapping them in her sights if an ailment stretches beyond the minor kind. nonetheless, she’s soft enough that she might allow the occasional visit, even if they are short and watched with a careful eye.

-aggressive - whilst not perhaps the most natural of fighters, the aforementioned fierce protectiveness goes hand in hand with an aggressive streak. poppy will shout when the safety of a patient is compromised, even if it risks said patient’s hearing. she has no qualms about angrily tackling those who would dare question her, which can cause various problems.

-emotional - some have termed her ‘hysterical’ which, with her muggle medical understanding, poppy deems highly offensive. she is inclined to tearful outbursts, though is usually able to maintain composure if her skills are required — even if she is found to be a sobbing mess shortly after saving a life. students are more likely to see the stoic side of her, which certainly exists in equal measure, but this is her way of maintaining order in her infirmary; besides, she doesn’t find fixing broken bones and the like to be particularly upsetting.

born the second daughter of liberal, magical parents, poppy has been surrounded by witchcraft and wizardry her entire life. her mother, a hufflepuff healer, is her antithesis in many ways; perpetually calm and eternally warm, she is a creature of comfort for her own patients, whereas her daughter’s bedside manner tends to have a firmer, anxious edge. poppy’s father, a ravenclaw, is an alchemist of considerable ability and, like his younger child, more of a highly strung, intellectual character. completing the family is violet, a far older sister, who still delights in reminding poppy that she was an (‘unhappy’) accident. being the youngest, by a fairly considerable gap, poppy grew quickly in her youth, taking to her mother’s books and her father’s journals to seek ways to converse with her family without dragging them to her childish level.

sorted into ravenclaw at the age of 11, poppy discovered both age-appropriate friends and an identity of her own, though her love of healing and her passion for potions did not fade in her new verdant home, away from the london smog. she never discarded her maturity even during her earliest years at hogwarts, but she was certainly truer to herself without a family to please so directly. to this day, she credits minerva mcgonagall with the oft bolshy courage she carries around the infirmary.

at 16, poppy was alarmed to realise that boys had begun to notice her. a relatively popular girl, well-presented and quick to help others with their work, she wasn’t entirely surprised at first to spot a few extra faces in her study group. it was minerva, with all her non-existent tact, who leaned over to comment on certain growth around the bust; the illusion that she was being genuinely helpful quickly came crashing down. she knew how it all worked from her books, and even had a niece to coo over during the holidays, but the relationships that stole her free time for a while after that were peculiar and dissatisfying. it was down to minerva once again, aided by alastor moody, to inform poppy that her sexuality was very much up for debate. suddenly her fascination with watching minerva’s frankly dangerous quidditch tricks made an awful lot of sense…

after graduating from hogwarts, poppy trained at st mungo’s under her mother’s watchful eye, choosing to focus her talents on paediatric healing. once again suffocated at home, as well as at work, she grasped the opportunity to fill the post of hogwarts matron with both hands when it was mentioned to her. she has been happily there ever since, largely contentedly alone and perfectly comfortable with a continuous stream of children to mother — without the horrific remnants of labour on her body and memory.

in war, poppy made her association with the order of the phoenix clear to the right people, but never formally joined their ranks. in her mind, as dumbledore agreed, she was better without the recognisable connection. nevertheless, her days spent treating students bled into nights aiding order members in her personal quarters. if she ever has to house mr sirius black, or some other poor soul, in her spare bedroom with a nasty wound again, she is sure she will lose her mind. but, if the darkness comes knocking once more, she will gladly take that risk.

- poppy absolutely has an unreciprocated crush on minerva, long since weaved with friendship and familial love, which i could certainly see as a point of contention between the two during heated moments.

- entirely open to romantic subplots, but poppy will always focus on her patients first!

his boggart has changed throughout his life. maybe that means that he’s always been scared; always been afraid of what might be. although he hasn’t seen a boggart recently, frank is certain it would be the loss of alice or neville, which is maybe his biggest fear of all. he now has a family, and he would be lost if he were to lose them.

personality traits —

+ compassionate: frank has always been kind. he’s had a heart for those who need it; a keen eye to help when someone is hurting. he’s never known how he got pushed into the role of being the person people lean on, but he enjoys it. he enjoys knowing that he can make someone feel better with a long talk or a cuppa. it quite reminds him of his father, stern and stoic as he was. their ability to soothe was similar, and frank had always admired that in himself.

+ flexible: although steadfast in his morals, frank is not one to be stubborn. he easily bends his mind if it means that the job (or the conversation) will be easier. it makes him a good friend; a person who is easy to apologize for mistakes he’s made or the person hew as in the past. frank learns easily and doesn’t like to stay in one spot. he hopes to grow, and knows that it is impossible to do so if he isn’t flexible.

- over-protective: although he, sometimes, finds his protectiveness a use, for the most part it just gets in frank’s way. he can’t seem to stop protecting the people he cares about. if he knows they need help, he will over-help to the point where they might start to resent him. frank doesn’t know when to stop, and he truly doesn’t know what it does to the people around. he doesn’t realize that he might be stepping over lines that he shouldn’t be crossing.

- paranoid: hand-in-hand with his over-protectiveness is frank’s paranoia. especially since the war ended, frank has almost sounded like a conspiracy-theorist. he knows with every inch of his being  that the war will come back. he knows that he must take every precaution to keep them safe. this makes him not only a bit less present in his family life but in his job. he’s not quite sure how to stop it but it’s taking a toll on his mental health as well. it’s not long before he knows his physical health will go down the drain too.

character biography —

When Frank was born, no one would’ve expected him to turn out an auror. He was scared of everything: from too hot pans to tiny bugs that would appear in the kitchen. No one could understand how this child was the product of one Augusta and Abaeze Longbottom. For many years, Frank couldn’t understand it himself. His mother was on the Wizengamot and his father, having immigrated from Nigeria, rose his way in a new country through the Department of Mysteries (like his father before him). They were fearless supporters of muggleborn rights (although Augusta was not exactly the best at showing that support outside the debate room), bright minds leading Wizarding England into the future. Meanwhile, Frank couldn’t even learn to hold his wand properly without fumbling when a spark shot out of it.

Of course, that put a slight strain on his relationship with his parents, especially his mother. Where Abaeze had learned to be patient, Augusta had learned frustration. She would often get short with her son if he wasn’t able to figure out a spell and, even at a young age, expected nothing more than her son to be perfect. Frank tried as hard as he could to please her, and earned the reputation of a goody-two-shoes. Where other pure blood kids would sneak off at social gatherings to play games, Frank remained either with a book in his hand or socializing with those adults whom his mother hoped to please. And, a part of him never minded. He adored his alone time, especially if they meant settling in with a good book. Nothing to scare him there. Only words and stories that he longed to be real. He’d practically exhausted the selection in their home library by the time his Hogwarts letter arrived.

Frank finally was given an owl and a wand (his own wand! something he could hold and not fear an explosion from), and was sent off on the Express with few words of wisdom and money for pasties on the train. He was determined to make friends this go round, after all, muggleborns and halfbloods would be here as well. Maybe it was fate that he ended up in Alice’s cart. He knew of her, of course, from pureblood society, and was disappointed at first not to meet someone different. That disappointment quickly turned to a feeling of luck. He’d never met anyone who he’d bonded with faster than Alice Rosier.

When they got to Hogwarts, he was shocked to find the hat almost instantly shouting Gryffindor! upon touching his head. As if a switch had been flipped, Augusta wrote with a letter saying how proud she was that her son was in the same house as her. A bit of the pressure she’d put on him began to lessen, especially as Frank’s grades proved to be formidable. Soon, although still afraid of a lot, Frank began following in his parents’ footsteps. He even got detention once for trying to stop a Slytherin pureblood from hurting a first year muggleborn. His mother had cried tears of pride upon hearing that fact (although Frank still got a talking to as to why it was wrong to curse a bully and not talk to them first).

It was on a warm spring day that an Auror visited their Defense Against the Dark Arts class and talked about what it was like to work as a premiere wizarding law enforcement agent. Frank was star-struck. Starting his fourth year, Frank came into school with a new purpose and it wasn’t long before he started to look forward to the future. With a recommendation from both Flitwick and McGonagall, Frank was almost instantly accepted to the program, especially upon getting Head Boy in his final year of school. It was sometime in there (although Frank never was certain when he fell in love with Alice, he always just was in love with her) that he’d asked Alice to be his girlfriend. When they became aurors together, well, that was just a cherry on a very tasty cake.

And then the war started.

It was almost like his dream turned slowly into a nightmare. The bright edges turned a little bit grayer. Yet, there were always moments of sunshine. He and Alice got married and had Neville. Frank thought he knew love; thought he knew what it meant to be in love, but then Neville was born and it was like the entire world had stopped. The prophecy was spoken and he felt as though he were going to explode every day with the thought of keeping his son safe. He didn’t expect what was to happen next. He didn’t know that it would be his mother to be the one to save his son.

To this day, he wishes it were him. Frank feels a deep sense of regret that his father was left alone because his mother did what he couldn’t. Of course, he wasn’t home. Alice and himself were on a mission. It’s been five years and he still feels a deep sense of guilt for what happened to his mother. And, surprisingly, he misses her. He misses her quips and her over-the-top speeches. He misses her silly outfits and the way she had to wear her hat just right. But most of all, he misses the fact that he had just started to become friends with his mum. The war is over but he can’t help but think that it might start up again. And Frank refuses to lose anyone. No, not this time. Frank would be damned if he let anyone take away his family again.

plot ideas —

madness: i want to see what happens if frank lets his paranoia take over. he’s got a good heart, but what if he thinks his family is in trouble? what if he thinks that alice or neville might be at risk again? he would go to any lengths to see them safe, even if that means betraying what he believes in.

grief: i don’t think that frank has ever truly dealt with what happened with his mother. he has never given himself the time to realize what happened to her and take a breath. he has been so consumed with taking care of everyone else, namely his dad, that he hasn’t thought about taking care of himself. what happens if he gives in to his grief? what happens if he finds himself falling in too deep?

care: frank cares deeply about his friends and he can’t imagine what lily potter is going through right now. while he wants to make sure remus was alright, he also hopes that the young mother is taking care of herself as well. while he knows there’s not much he could do, the thought of losing alice in an attack was enough to make him want to help in any way he can.

worry: while he knows that remus doesn’t need the care, he worries about the younger man. his status as a werewolf is precarious at best, and frank doesn’t know just how to help. he fears he’s overdoing it. and what if he is? what if he’s pushing remus away because he cares too much? it’s the dad in him, of course, but he hopes he won’t lose a friend in his paranoia.

family: frank knows that alice is having a rough time lately, just like his father. they are both feeling as guilty as he is, and he hopes to take some of that guilt off their shoulders. besides, he loves alice more than anything in the world. maybe it’s time that he shows them what his love means.

personality traits — 

Determined: The impossible is possible. Moody believes anything can be accomplished with enough time, effort, and desire placed behind it. No corners are cut in his efforts at work, with Order missions, or ensuring the proper training of the newest recruits. One doesn’t take kindly to those who believe there is no hope in extinguishing the darkness in the world or making it a better place.

Loyal” Despite an outwardly gruff exterior, Alastor has a quick judge of character, latching quickly and deeply to those he believes he can trust. Too much of his thoughts lingering on ensuring his friends and his Aurors are safe, spending his own free time and sanity on completing 

Closed off: An Auror is a dangerous job, fighting against the Dark Lord and his followers is a death sentence. The idea of being harmed or killed to leave those behind with any form of regret or sadness is something to be avoided. How can someone miss you if they never knew you in the first place? Such thoughts cause Alastor to second guess the personal relations in his life, even though he knows it’s only human to bond with others. 

Paranoid: The scars of war came not only in the physical form. Already a nervous person from his youth, albeit a more healthy confliction, Alastor can never shake the feeling of being watched. Hunted. Overcautious in his personal life, not consuming foods or drink not produced in front of him to being wary of every person that appears to be moving in the  same direction on the street. 

character biography — 

Life is dangerous Alastor, one always has to be on your toes! An afterthought of a full career for two Aurors, yet he never felt as if he was a burden. His mother had a large laugh and hummed while about the house, his father in love with her ever waking moment of the day. But they were gone often, understandably, but a child could never completely rid the selfish feeling of being left behind.

He is to be an Auror, like his parents and those before them. It’s in their blood and Alastor doesn’t shrink away from the challenge. Hogwarts is everything that was promised and more, access to so much information Moody hardly has the time to consume as much as he desires. The friends a welcomed bonus to the rigors of academia, bliss such slate nights spent rolling with laughter, the camaraderie in the Gryffindor common room after a Quidditch victory are memories he holds close and often to his chest. How young and foolish they all were. 

Becoming an Auror is easy, a childhood of practice and words of those before him make the long hours and trials worth every body ache or jinxed limb. Yet the work is not as rewarding as one thought. Paperwork and a reason why things cannot be done with efficiency behind every corner. And it’s here when the reality of the depravity of wizardkind comes to light, how people treat one another purely based on their blood, yet the Ministry is slow and unable to protect their citizens while thumbs stand by idle. Of course he loves his job, loves the long hours and the small victories but Merlin! There is never enough done, a part of him lacking something in his life. 

The Order of the Phoenix was something that was missing. Something that actually mattered behind and the paperwork and mundane arrests of criminals. The fire and passion in the group, borderline erotic. Yet it takes almost everything from them, the breaking of trust, the exhaustion. Alastor finds it difficult to believe it simply ends one day, refuses to believe it just ends like that. And it comes as a painful relief to know it isn’t...even if they have to do it all again so soon.

plot ideas — 

+All of the Order missions! Even if they do not have a great deal of actions (ie fighting) in them I love setting up scenarios for characters to have to talk about the deeper issues that come with war! Especially when they are fighting  against people they grew up with and spent years with at school. I think such great character growth comes when characters are 

+Trials from the first war? I know politics are slow and corrupt especially in the HP universe, revisiting war criminals from Voldemort’s first rise and digging up otherwise buried emotions people are putting behind them. Alastor has an awful habit of being unable to forget the past. 

+Auror training! Alastor is very eccentric as we know and his methods of teaching are very very unconventional. Constant vigilance would apply when Auror prospects are away from the Ministry as well! Moody would not be beyond kidnapping students from their beds and setting them off thinking they were captured by Death Eaters or some Dark creature only to be controlling the strings from behind the scenes. Of course he is also there when trainees might be struggling , offering helpful lessons or hope for the future. 

+Butting heads with the younger generations. Alastor is one of the most stubborn men you will ever meet, but that doesn’t mean he’s against change. The youth are what affect the future and would love to see some younger characters butt heads with him! On the other end would love to see Moody fight with people inside the Ministry in the more law making role.

She can never forget how her voice boomed like thunder when she was angry, nor the sound of glass shattering when thrown against a wall. Ophelia sees all the qualities she hates in herself stem from her.

Ophelia finds a way to get things done. She uses quick wit to evaluate situations; to puzzle together the bigger picture and see things for how they are and how they could be.

When Ophelia works towards a goal, she’ll be damned before she allows someone to stand in her way. Years of having her ambitions trampled on by her father in favor of her older brother have left her diligent and downright ruthless in order to get what she desires.

- Guarded

Ophelia resembles a bear trap: get too close and she’ll snap shut, but not without taking a piece of you with her. She finds comfort within the walls she’s built up, careful not to let anyone inside. She’ll inevitably disappoint them, anyway.

Nothing she does is ever good enough. Ophelia tends to push herself to the absolute limit in order to prove her worth, but it will never satisfy her. She has to do her best, to be the best and she cannot accept that she’s only human. It’s only a matter of time before she breaks.

Born in Louisiana, her earliest memories were dotted with the warmth of the summer sun and only contrasted with the polar blue of her mother’s eyes and the chill of her father’s indifference. By the time she’s five, Ophelia’s all too familiar with the metallic taste of blood in her mouth from biting her tongue too hard. Pureblood girls should be seen rather than heard, according to her mother. One off hand comment about thinking marriage is ‘icky’ and Ophelia winds up jinxed with a mouthful of soap bubbles. A life long aversion to the pink-speckled Bertie Bott jelly bean and a reluctance to argue with her mother follows. She has three older siblings, only her brother Otto makes time for her.

At eleven she stands dead-center of a gordian knot. Ophelia stares back at the four statues in front of her, insides fluttering. The whole school is looking at her from the balcony and the dark wood paneling of the entrance hall feels as though it’s closing in. She looks up to the balcony, and there he is. Her brother’s smile is crooked and good-natured. Two statues move forward: Wampus, who favors warriors and Horned Serpent, who favors scholars. Ophelia will later wonder how her life would have been different if she had joined Wampus. Either way, she prospered in Horned Serpent, her keen mind soaking up all she could get her hands on to read. Ophelia’s grades were outstanding, but it wasn’t enough. The best and only the best was all she would accept. Anything less was a failure.  Ilvermorny became her home; a place where she could flourish. She was safe behind the castle walls, even as whispers of war sailed in from across the Atlantic.

She’s fifteen when Otto is disowned. His smile was still crooked as he cursed their family name with a mouthful of blood. Ophelia watched from afar with her other siblings as her mother’s silvery voice contorted into a roar more akin to a Hungarian Horntail than a five-foot-two woman. She flinches whenever an impossibly straight red jet of light hits the young man in the chest. He goes down with a cry of unbearable pain and Ophelia’s mind drifts to Christmas, only three days away. She’s always loved the holiday. With the twinkling lights and the annual parties, or when their family tolerates each other long enough to sit at a family dinner. Now, all she sees is her brother begging for mercy on the floor. She doesn’t like the holiday season after that ever again.

England is foreign to her. The craggy cliffs of Dorset where her cousins reside are so far away from the muddy Mississippi River. But she steels herself and pulls through because that’s what she has to do. Her aunt and uncle talk about their Dark Lord with all the fervor of the religious zealots back home. He’s a messiah in their eyes, giving their hatred for no maj-borns a platform. Ophelia hears him speak at a party a few days before she turns sixteen. He’s charismatic, she’ll give him that, but there’s something about him that makes her want to turn tail and run for the hills. At Hogwarts she’s sorted into her second house with a snake as its mascot. Slytherin house is not as warm as Horned Serpent, and it is not her home. More than often she finds it hard to sleep in that cold, damp dungeon. But this is her life now, and she adapts. For the next two years she claws her way to academic success, but stays notoriously aloof to her fellow peers. There are times she feels as though there is something wrong with her. She feels empty inside, as if someone took a melon baller and scooped out everything good about her.

She doesn’t return to America when she graduates. War gives her reasons to burn bridges, makes it easier for her to claim, ‘oh, I’m busy’ and move on with her day. Ophelia gets her training as an auror and right off the bat her family disapproves. It goes against her childhood teachings of ‘seen, not heard,’ and arguments are futile. No matter how many times she claims it’s to get a foothold in the Ministry, her family finds it a waste of her time. She could do much more as a servant to the Dark Lord (by this time his name has become synonymous with the taste of bile and a retch of disgust). It’s too late anyways, Ophelia already has her mind set and by God she’d like to see them try and stop her. She will be the servant of no one, thank you very much. Her outlook on the Order isn’t much better, though. So what if they get rid of Voldemort? There will be another like him. And another after that, and so on and so forth. Maybe she’s just a cynic, but history continues to prove her right. What makes this time different? Not a goddamn thing. But there’s a part of her that wants them to prove her wrong— a first in her life, given she hates being wrong. The part of her who remembers her brother smiling with a mouthful of blood in a final act of defiance. Because Ophelia is cynical enough to know there will always be another Dark Lord, but the determined bit of hope left in her heart knows there will always be more willing to fight against him. Will she be one of them?

plot ideas — 

I think Ophelia needs someone to see through her air of indifference. She needs someone to prove to her there’s much more to life than power and control. It doesn’t matter whether it’s romantic or platonic, she just needs someone she can trust. She’s set such unrealistic standards for herself that she’s completely convinced that she’s not good enough. It’d be interesting to see how she could react to someone accepting her flaws and all… or at least calling her out on her bullshit.

Something steeped in political intrigue is right up her alley. Perhaps something sways her from her neutral position and she gets wrapped up in it. Maybe one side offers her something she desires or the other twists her arm into helping them. Even if it’s something as simple (and potentially hilarious) as sleazing it up with people in high positions of power, I really think she’d thrive in that kind of situation.

She’s never been in a serious relationship before besides a few noncommittal flings. Ophelia’s never really been good at keeping friends, either, because she holds them at such a far distance. She turns into a bumbling mess when it comes to talking about feelings.

Ophelia, unlike her family, doesn’t give a damn about blood politics. She only values hard work and intelligence in others.
