"40 years ago today, April 21, 1986, Geraldo Rivera hosted the live opening of Al Capone’s supposed secret underground vault in the syndicated special The Mystery of Al Capone's Vaults.
The highly promoted two hour broadcast built anticipation around the possibility of uncovering hidden riches or long lost secrets from the Prohibition era crime boss. Instead, the vault was found to be nearly empty, with only debris and a single old bottle discovered.
Despite the anticlimactic result, the special became a massive television event, drawing one of the largest audiences in syndicated TV history and standing as a memorable example of hype driven live broadcasting." Source
