Things I Wish I Knew Before Landing in Cancun (Part 2): Why “Riviera Maya” Is Much Bigger Than Most Travelers Think
Before my first trip to Mexico, I made the same mistake a lot of travelers make.
I assumed that Cancun and the Riviera Maya were basically the same place.
They’re not.
In fact, “Riviera Maya” isn’t a city at all—it’s a stretch of coastline with dozens of beaches, towns, nature parks, and resorts spread across more than 100 kilometers (60+ miles).
That probably doesn’t sound like a big deal until you’re standing at Cancun International Airport trying to figure out how long it will take to reach your hotel.
Here’s what surprised me:
Puerto Morelos feels close.
Playa del Carmen is a comfortable drive.
Akumal is farther than I expected.
And Tulum? That’s practically another road trip if you’ve just landed after a long international flight.
Once I understood the geography, planning transportation became much easier.
Instead of searching for generic airport transfers, I started looking for destination-specific information.

The more I researched, the more I realized there isn’t a single “best” transportation option for everyone.
The right choice depends on where you’re staying, how many people are traveling with you, how much luggage you’re carrying, and whether you’re arriving in the middle of the day or late at night.
That’s something most travel guides don’t really explain.
They talk about Cancun as if every resort were just around the corner.
The reality is much more interesting.
The Riviera Maya is a collection of very different destinations, each with its own atmosphere, beaches, restaurants, and travel times.
Knowing that before you land makes the entire arrival experience feel much less overwhelming.
Sometimes the best travel tip isn’t discovering a hidden beach.
It’s simply understanding the map.
