Upon Hamathielās desk at Dawnwatchās front sits a small olive-green box, one of which is no larger than the manās palm. Adorned with a deep-green ribbon, there isnāt anything special about it and it might have gone unnoticed by anyone who wasnāt the warlock. Attached to the box is a hand written note inked with the following: āI remembered, just as this is meant to be a reminder. -Akiā. Inside the box is a simple pin with a banner for the Faire along with a depiction of the Darkmoon Eye.
Though little more than a day had passed from the time he found himself perusing his desk, it was one day too long for Hamathiel. He promised to take time to wind down and regather himself. The warlock knew he needed it just as much as any of his people, as all the stress would kill him otherwise. There was a distinct restlessness that came withĀ ādowntimeā that set nigh every one of his beingās fibers on edge however, ushering him back to the controlled chaos that was his work. Forever ceaseless in his ministrations, he needed to keep himself busy near as desperately.
Finding the lone box out of place upon his deskās structured surface gave him pause. It was nondescript as they came, diminutive in size and unremarkable. Were it not for its paired off parchment slip with nostalgically elegant script, his paranoia would have begun running rampant in its speculation over what ill meaning trick the objectās contents would be. The deliveryās simplicity and the cryptic sentiment that came alongside it spoke too plainly toward Akiās brand of interaction that it was trying not to smile wanly to himself. Eagerness setting in, slim fingers plucked it away in pretenseās absence to lift away its shallow lid.
What he came upon forced him motionless once again. When he saw to opening the box, he hardly expected to spy its occupant staring right back at him. It was a hastily paintedDarkmoon Eye pin, as a brief inspection would blatantly indicate. Fond warmth wilted beneath cloying discomfort under the pinās gaze, his own narrowing in a subconscious tic. It was meant to be a memento; a tiny hunk of resin and metal to recall their lovely first visit to the Faire together.
All he garnered from it was suffocating unease.
The lid being forcefully scraped back into place grated across his ears. It had been a wonderful evening, but subtracting Aki from the equation, he knew how the trip would have gone: far from as pleasant, to sat the least. Hamathiel sank down into his chairās satin backing while a rueful sigh chased out of his throat. He could remember that night without a tangible souvenir.
One of his deskās side drawers found itself being pried open no sooner than that thought yanked itself free. Tucking the dissonant vessel in against sturdy hardwood backing, he could bring himself to do no more than hope the monk forgave him for not receiving his gift outstandingly well.
It was a day like most any other for Hamathiel, busy with work and arranging upcoming tasks for the Dawnwatch. Curious as he was though, he always had to stop by Akiās room to get some idea of what the monk was up to with his day. So he did.
What he found was as common a sight as they came: Aki propped up on his bed with a book in hand, seeming content to laze around doing little more for Sun knew how long. Hamathiel could never fully understand how the other man could spend that much time doing little else. He would personally get restless sitting about like that without keeping his hands busy in his off time.
For whatever reason, this particular day left the warlock furrowing his brow at it all. It was true they had been through a great deal over the past while, but watching Aki idle around so frequently left him wanting to prod the man. Humming thoughtfully to himself, he decided to act on the impulse for once. Mismatched eyes flicked up his way briefly on his approach. When he doesnāt see to offering a greeting or explanation for his current stop by, down they go again. At least, up until Hamathielās advance came to a halt for deft fingers to sink into an awaiting mop of messy, pale blond hair.
However many times he parted with the simple, calming gestures, Hamathiel never grew tired of them. More to the point, he never grew tired of the reactions he received in answer. Platinum blond locks twisted and twined about in his grasp with the slightest gestures, striking the monk speechless the instant he attempted to talk. And when he tried again, a light scrapping of nails over Akiās scalp forced out a soft whine instead.
Then he stopped. Stark white hands returned to his sides at a momentās notice, leaving Aki blinking in a mild daze. It took a few seconds for him to come to, and when he did, it was with an indignant frown and wilted ears.
āGood afternoon to you too, Hama. That was⦠do you require something, orā¦?ā
Hamathiel gave a stunted shake of his head, lips twitching with the threat of a smirk.
āNot exactly, no. Ā I thought you would be out tending to the courtyard at this hour.ā
āI wished to catch up on my reading today,ā Aki returned with a deepening glower, as though it were the most obvious thing in the world.Ā āAre you certain you do not wish anything of me? With that comment, and⦠thatā¦ā
The monk trailed off briefly, ears sinking further into his hair while the faintest tinge of pink colored their tips. Small as the tell was, it made Hamathiel bite his bottom lip in an effort to keep a straight face.
āIf you wish to keep reading, thatās fine. Like I said, I simply thought you would be tending to your plants, or up to just about anything else, really. Not that Iām saying anything is wrong with reading,ā he quickly amended at the scowl slowly forming on the other manās face.Ā āNevermind, Aki.Ā Iāll just let you back to it.ā
Turning on his heel, Hamathiel took a step forward with every intention to do just that. Yet, the hand curling around his waist before he got out of reach spoke of different plans. With a forceful tug back, he found himself landing atop Akiās lap with a muffled whump, where that puzzled glower was looming right above him in wait.
āIt is not like you to be coy, Hamathiel. Now, stop running from the question, as I know when you are not being wholly truthful: what is it?ā
Brief as their conversation had been, he could see an abundance of serious intent in Akiās gaze with the question. A second glance showed hints of concern in them as well. He had said nothing overtly damning, had he? Then it hit Hamathiel: in the time they had known one another, was there a time where he actually teased the monk about anything? Reflecting on that, he turned up with a ānoā or āmaybe once?ā, which answered that question for him in a less than satisfactory fashion. Out of character as doing such was for him, his actions must have appeared as being far less benign than they truly were.
In retrospect, he really aught to have left Aki alone.
(( Yes I know itās the other way around. sorrynotsorry Thanks @the-sanguine-shadow! ))

I have never felt like this⦠I cannot even begin to express or explain it. These feelings are so⦠foreign. I am not sure how to evenā¦
It hurt. God did it hurt, but what was the reason behind this? Was it because of what had been said, had he simply mistook the words that his friend had spoken for something entirely different? Was this just a side effect from the past he had once lived, being brought back around from those memories that still haunted him? His fears? His paranoia? Was it something entirely different? Perhaps a little of each, but Aki wasnāt able to pinpoint the origin of such thoughts.
As he treaded carefully through the broken world that was known as the Plaguelands, inhaling breaths of stale air while choking on the lingering aroma of the rotted and decaying corpses and beasts that roamed the area, Aki finally settled beneath one of the deteriorating trees that still stood proudly.
It was a sight to behold, if anything else. Aki had never spent as much time in the Plaguelands as he had these past few weeks. In fact, before their work and varying other concerns had brought the group here, the monk couldnāt actually recall a time where he had visited this part of the world. Like most, he wasnāt too sure he really enjoyed being here, but nonetheless, he was.
His single fel-laced eye remained glossed over; the surrounding area red from having the course leather of his gloves constantly being ran over the eye to dry away any excess droplets of the salty fluids that had fallen. With his form wilting back against the tree as he sought safety and comfort from the dying piece of vegetation, Aki kept his sights trained on the ground beneath his feet. Tucking his legs up close to his chest, both arms were loosely draped over either knee.
He shouldnāt be feeling like this, he knew that, but he couldnāt help it. He couldnāt help it when he felt the warmth of something trickling down the right side of his face, only be too absorbed by the material of his scarf. He knew he had no right to be feeling the way he did, it was selfish and he hated it. After all, it was his doing, his words and actions that had been the foundation for this issue to persist and grow out of hand as it had. He should have just kept those thoughts to himself as he originally planned to. Why the hell did he have to open up about them? Whether he wanted to or not, he shouldnāt have. He had overstepped his boundaries and Aki was currently regretting every minute of it. On top of that, it was not his place to encroach on whatever it was that had upset Hamathiel and he should have respected that. Not once had the warlock ever bothered him about why he had a problem when it came to touching his backāor his person in general. Not once had Hamathiel ever tried to pry information from him regarding any of the issues that the monk had, so why had heā¦
Aki didnāt have to ask himself that. He knew the answer before the thought even came to an end: it was because those words that his friend had spoken, those words saying how he just wasnāt able to confess those thoughts yetāthey were all too familiar to Aki. He had heard them before, from another who he once thought to be a friend and someone he could trustāonly to find out that the individual didnāt feel like the monk could be trusted with that information. That of course was not the first ever incident. No, he had heard those words come from many people, all from different walks of life and if anything, it stung deeply. Even after all these years, he still didnāt understand why so manyāwhy everyone felt as if he couldnāt be trusted. Sure, he could come off as being violent more times than none, but he always had reason behind it and sure, he tried his best to keep everyone at an armās length away, but that didnāt mean he wasnāt to be trusted. He had allowed a select few to get close over the years and each one proved to be a wrongfully made choice, and even they never felt like he could be trusted.
Curling in further upon himself, Aki pressed his face against the tops of his legs. What did he ever do to them to deserve this..? What had he done to deserve the countless teasing, mental and physical abuse, the judgement of others simply because his face had been marred by one of those bad choices? Those things werenāt his faultāhe didnāt harm those people, they harmed himāyet here he was, still absorbing the backlash from others. He knew he was different in many aspects, but if people actually took the time to get to know him? Maybe⦠just maybe, they would be able to better understand him? Understand the daily struggle he had to go through just to understand even the simplest things?
He had thought that Hamathiel would be different. He had hoped he would be different than the othersāgod how he had hoped for that. And Aki honestly believed that he was which is why he put his trust in the man. Why he had opened those doors that had been sealed off for so long. Why he had said what he did. He meant those words, each and every one of them. Hamathiel was his friend, his only friendāhis first real friend in over two centuries and that meant everything to him. He finally had someone he thought he could trust and count onāsomeone he could confide in. Even if the warlock didnāt feel the same or see it as that, Aki did.
But that didnāt really matter now, did it? The damage had been done and there was no going back.
Wilted ears twitching with the occasional sound of the thudding paws of a passing Plaguehound, or the flutter of velvet wings of an overhead bat, the smaller Elf sat there in silence. He needed something to clear his mind before he broke beyond repair. He had means of doing so, but he had made a promise to someone that he would never resort to that method again. But⦠that was a long time ago now and he needed that release. He needed it.
Burying a hand into the violet coloured satchel that hung from around his waist, it wouldnāt be long before two cases were produced: one made of a darker, hard wood while the other was made of a lightweight metal. Opening the wooden case first, Aki pulled free three of the five rolls of Bloodthistle he had been saving. Placing two in his lap, the monk curled a finger around the top edge of his scarf and pulled it free of his face before placing the end of the cigarette into his mouth. This particular drug wasnāt something all that new to him, as he often smoked the herb on occasion. No, it was what the other case contained that had him worried.
Holding the cigarette between his lips, Aki pulled the remaining case over to also rest in his lap. Staring towards the sealed item for quite some time, he would see to eventually opening it. Sitting neatly against the deep blue cloth that lined the interior of the case were three metal syringes: each containing a different coloured vial of fluid.
Inhaling a sharp breath at the sight of those goblin-engineered injectors, they were all too familiar despite the amount of time that had passed since he last used such a thing. He wasnāt even sure if the fluids they contained were still safe to use, but at this point, Aki didnāt really care and was willing to take that risk. Gingerly picking up one of the injectors, Aki eyed it thoroughly. Did he really need this..? Would this really help himāwas he making the right choice? He already knew the answer to those questions.
Extending his right arm out in front of him, Aki gently placed the cooled metal of the injectorās body against the warmed skin of his inner arm. Swallowing hard before a small smirk painted its way across his lips, the cigarette being slowly rolled between his lips, Aki moved the head of the needle towards his exposed skin. Sure enough and with a fair amount of pressure being applied, the sharpened point easily pierced through those layers of skin. Flinching some at the small pinch of pain, Aki slowly pressed down on the plunger of the device, forcing the foreign substance into his system. It stung at first when the fluid was pumped into his veins and caused his arm to grow numb for a short time, but that was to expected.
Exhaling a heavy sigh of relief in the following moments when the drug began to take effect, Aki leaned his spine back against the rotted trunk of the tree. That feeling⦠oh, how he had missed that feeling of having his mind and troubles eased out of his mind, only to be replaced by a dense fog. Aki would remain propped up against the tree for the rest of the night, seeing to injecting the remaining two drugs once the other had begun to take its full effect. Lighting the end of his cigarette with a spark of his chi energy, Aki inhaled and welcomed that smoke into his system, smirking all the while.
Hamathiel had mentioned that they had work the following evening⦠how enjoyable and convenient for the monk. Puffing away on his Bloodthistle, that smirk against his lips only grew in size. Tomorrow evening would most certainly prove to be interesting...
Akitearās ears perked fully at the offered question, histwo-toned gaze lifting from the inked pages of the leather-bound journal he hadbeen reading only to settle upon the newcomer. āI only get to choose five..?That seems hardly fairāso long as the sweets have not been tainted by thatsickening, stomach-churningāas long as the sweet is lacking any form ofchocolate, there is a high possibility that I will find it rather enjoyable.ā
Ticking his ears back a bit to hide the faint shade ofcrimson that had begun to overtake the tips of his ears, Aki cleared histhrough quietly before speaking up, āBut if I must choose only five⦠I supposeI would have to go with my top choice being vanilla cupcakes. There is justsomething about them that⦠I cannot even begin to describe it. My next choicewould have to be⦠I am not all that sure what they were called, but I recallthem having a distinct apple flavoring while also being in the shape of roses.Hamathiel had offered me some of those pastries during one of the firstevenings that we had a⦠well, a conversation that did not end in me wanting tostick his head with a stake. I am still glad that he⦠did that.ā
Blinking a few times as that same crimson colouring crept acrossthe surface of his cheeks, heād quickly spouted the remaining answers, practically shouting them over his shoulder while removing himself from thearea, āCinnamon Raisin and Peanut Butter Bars, Butter Tarts with almonds and raisins, and Raspberry-LemonCream Cups!ā
Finally finished! Only took forever X__X Thereās not enough time in a day to get all these things done. But anyway! Hereās the ever grumpy monk, Aki ^_^;
@blurrability I told you I would finish it D:<
