suckers along the underside/backside of his limbs that can absorb into his skin, though the outline of them are always faintly visible
two-inch long fins that have grown out of his temples (like that of a cirrate octopod) that are usually flopped downwards like puppy ears but he can move at will whether in water or out.
thin rectangular-shaped pupils that constrict and expand according to being in direct sunlight or not, and seeing underwater. this also allows for a panoramic view of his surroundings, enabling extremely advanced peripheral vision. much like a camera lens, his eyes have a muscle that can zoom his vision in and out.

was offered a spot in the seven warlords when the system was still in place. his response was to set fire to the nearest naval base.
his island was once under the protection of whitebeard. since then, several of whitebeard's old crew and allies have taken refuge, protecting it from those who wish to take it over.
his brother, kensei, died protecting the island against corrupt marines, looking to extort money from the village. upon finding that he was half-fishman, they captured him and attempted to take him in, to be sold to slavery. however, in the struggle, a marine ends up fatally wounding him and that naval ship ends up destroyed by the villagers who later become the crimson reaper's crew.
has lived a majority of his childhood amongst humans. the village was among those who accepted fishman-kind and protected them, but because he and kensei grew up around humans, they weren't able to learn much about their heritage or develop their abilities. it's not until akai sets out at twenty-one years old and travels to fishman island that he learns more and also learns to fight as a fishman.
admires the sun pirates and understands their cause, even that of arlong's, but having lived amongst humans who protected them, he couldn't devote his full support to those who wanted to do away with humans. however, he wouldn't hesitate to kill a human who turned a violent hand towards a fishman.
