Hi! I've been re-reading Nana which is my absolute fave manga and randomly found your tumblr. I was wondering if you ever thought about what Ren's last gift to Nana was? I thought about it and I think it might be song for her... In one of the last chapters Ren wants to quit Trapnest and has flashbacks of Nana asking not to write songs for another woman. I was thinking it might be a tape. What do you think?
I seem to be the blog that people find after rereading NANA u_u;
I’ve absolutely thought about Ren’s last gift to Nana! There’s so many possibilities… I’ve seen a lot of theories including the possibility of him writing a song. Off the top of my head I remember theories like:
Aforementioned song tape written for Nana
Photo of them together
Signed marriage certificate/Family registry
Key (a new house for them both)
Key to his old place
Wedding rings
Tickets out of the country for them to start a new life together
Tickets for their honeymoon
I know I’ve read more though lol. I really like the idea of it being a tape with a song written for Nana’s voice though! It was something Nana was so upset about and that Ren clearly remembered she had a problem with. It makes soo much sense! Also the music that Nobu heard when Ren died… it might have been notes from the song he wrote for Nana! I know that makes it a paranormal manga but I mean… Nobu also got visited by Nana’s grandma’s ghost in an extra chapter lol.
But a key makes sense too! He’s got a lock around his neck that Nana put to make him hers - plus in the future Nana is at a place with a key on the logo. It wasn’t the lock around his neck at least, since we know he was wearing when he died…
I like honeymoon tickets too - Hachi dreamed about Ren handing her tickets once so I can see that parallel there too.
…Basically I really don’t know lol. But I kinda think whatever the gift was it was reaffirming their relationship? Rather than a break up… I mean it’s hard to say though. But it’d be kinda mean to wrap up something up like a gift if it was a break up thing, even if Ren might have seen letting Nana go free as a gift.
I feel like the gift has become like Trudy’s last gift to Adrian in the tv show Monk lol…. Maybe it’s a tape giving Nana all the answers like in Monk. Maybe when we finally see inside we’ll get answers to questions we weren’t expecting to find inside. Because I feel like Yazawa and Ren are thoughtful and creative enough to think of a gift we haven’t thought of that would suit Nana.
It seems that life is constructed in a way that no one can fulfil it alone. Just as it's not enough for flowers to have pistils and stamens, an insect or a breeze must introduce a pistil to a stamen. Life contains its own absence, which only another can fulfil.
