Super excited to have this piece selected for the upcoming American Illustration book & show — a big THANK YOU to this year’s jury and to AD Laurie Hawton from Mpls.St.Paul Magazine for sending this project my way!!
Happy to say that “The Whitewashing of Missouri” has been selected for this year’s International Motion Art Awards from AI-AP — many thanks to director Mark Heflin & all the jury members!
“Created in partnership with Detour and the Missouri School of Journalism, this animated documentary short tells the story of Pierce City, Missouri, and the racial violence that drove many Black families from the area during the early 1900s. Decades after her ancestors fled the city, Rochelle Fritsch discovered the ugly history that displaced an entire generation of her family and returned to the town to honor their memory.”
“Brian Rea has a great passion for illustration. Based in Los Angeles, the former New York Times art director creates editorial illustrations for numerous publications (including a remarkable ongoing assignment for the Times's Modern Love column), and has been making a brilliant series of animations, books, posters, murals, installations, commercial work, and more. His artwork is smart, subtle, and multifaceted; simple line drawings with wash that can convey deep and complex meanings. There's a great sense of both joy and intelligence in Rea's work, and it looks like he's having a blast working across so many formats and platforms. As he says, "It's pretty damn fun to be an illustrator now."” - By Robert Newman AI-AP profiles Thursday August 13, 2015
This piece was selected for American Illustration Annual 35. Super proud, and excited. What a honor. More blessings to come.
