She was everywhere.

From the second you stepped outside to when you returned, Hani was right there. Section Chief Ahn they called her; she took care of everything from changing light bulbs to selling real estate.

Whenever she passed you, she tilted her head and gave you that cocky little smirk. Every little thing she did got under your skin, and it didn’t help that everyone couldn’t stop boasting about her. “She graduated from Seoul University!” “Top of the class too.” You went to freaking dental school, but no one paid you a second glance. The only time it matter was when you were halfway into their mouth.

“Is she pretty though?”

“Really,” you deadpanned. “I’ve been talking about how much she bothers me for almost an hour, and that’s what you want to know?”

“Pretty people can have worse personalities than ugly people, because people are more inclined to like them,” your best friend replied. “I’m just trying to put the pieces together.”

You chuckled, switching the phone from one ear to the other. “Hours away and you still sound like you’re playing Profiler.” Coming down the road to the coffee shop, you glanced down at your watch.

Deciding you could spare a few minutes to get your morning coffee, you pulled at the door handle. But a person standing in the door frame stopped you in your tracks. And of course, she was sporting her signature smirk. As if things couldn’t get any worse, she reached up and touched the brim of her imaginary hat, tipping it forward.

“Good morning,” Hani greeted.

“Hello.”

You gestured for her to walk out, but she stood her ground. “So angry in the morning,” Hani commented, a silly grin taking over. “The drip coffee is really good today, I’ll make you a cup.”

You’d had enough.

“Do you think you’re good looking?” You nearly exploded in her face, staring right into her eyes. “In Seoul, a face like yours is more common than gum spat on the ground.”

Hani stared back at you. Confusion and amusement clouded her eyes, more the latter than the former. But still, she just stood there.

“It’s more common than squid brought into the harbor this morning.”

She took a step forward, instantly closing the distance between you. Analytical brown eyes scanned your face, and you practically felt your eyes lose their fire. Your bottom lip jutted out slightly as you raised your eyebrows, waiting for her to make a move. Hani tilted her head, and her eyes met yours once more. But this time, you couldn’t tell what was going on in her head.
