There are times I wish that the Agori & Protectors were just Matoran.
One of the things I’ve come to like about the Bionicle mini sets is that it shows you how unique & diverse the Bionicle universe appears.
Like each yearly Matoran design belonging to a particular village/island.
Imagining the Agori as having absurdly long lifespans is so funny bc from their perspective the Matoran Universe is populated almost entirely by kids. What do you mean the oldest people in your universe are like 20. What do you mean your GOD is like 20. Raanu somehow learns Onewa is 18k years old and is slam dunked by the realization that this respected and experienced village leader he's discussing architectural fallacies with hasn't even properly started childhood yet. Forget the club he should be at the daycare

Toa Tuesday: Asshole Agori Metus
Awwww, somebody don't like being called out for being a jerk? TOO BAD!
The jungle tribe has a theme of distillation, of poison and/or blood. Involves rites of purification and scarification. Snakes are sacred animals so they are killed painlessly, skinned and cleaned of all meat. Snake blood is only employed in holiday dishes. The skeletons (covered in snakeskin) are used as rosary beads. Prayer is usually done with at least one more person, in silence.
The ice tribe has a theme of provision, food, paying dues. They make "deals" with the personifications of sustenance (Hunting, Gathering, Husbandry, Agriculture) and repay them with "meals", so food is killed twice - first the actual death, second the sacrifice. Offerings are arranged in wind chimes that function as prayer wheels. Divination with astragalia is passed down in certain circles.
The sand tribe has a theme of invisibility or camouflages. The divine can only be seen partially, when covered or hidden by something or when it is disguised as something else. Optic illusions and patterns become omens of good or ill fortune. Kabrua and his people add a theme of "being at a distance" - they believe Velika is always near them and speak of him as if he was physically present.
The fire tribe has a theme of destruction and renewal. Ritual burnings of fields happen after harvest to let the ashes seep into the earth and make it healthy again. Rites are held only after sundown. Thick fireproof clothes are necessary for rites and holidays. Lanterns are objects of worship and emblazoned on amulets for protection. The dead are cremated and molded into glass for lanterns.
The water tribe has a theme of classification, cyclicity. Different sexes are in charge of different rites. Prayer is sung, though Kiina's people are used to tapping it on their scales instead. Coming-of-age rituals involve offering toys drift to bodies of water. Shrines are usually underwater grottos but have copies on dry land for easy access. The primary worship is that of the flow of time.
The rock tribe has a theme of life, strength, breath. Most festivities involve physical competitions: the losers make offers to the victors, who then offer them to the spirits of victors past or similar entities. Preparation for battles or similar activities is sacred in and of itself. Priesthood lasts only a few years, so everyone covers the role in their life. Grief is theatrical, exaggerated by a wide range of wails.
The iron tribe has a theme of transformation. Old miners perform rites for safe digging at the start of every day. Metals are branded with blessings specific to their next use before being melted. Curses are carved with rusted tips. Tombs must hold at least one body part. Off-season dried flowers are used to mitigate unpleasant weather. Small magic rituals are common in day-to-day life.
The cult of the great beings varies from area to area: in some cases they are worshipped as a monolith, in other cases each one is associated with a certain expertise; they are all generally considered gods of progress. The element lords are more simply revered as taumathurgic rulers and embodiments of natural forces.
